Living and working in a rural community gives you a different perspective.

You see how people prepare.
You see how communities come together.
And you also see where things get hard — especially when systems don’t quite line up with real life.

This article reflects a lot of those observations.

It’s part of a bigger body of work I’ve been developing around resilience and how we better support people — not just before emergencies, but after them as well.

It’s a small step, but an important one for me.

Thanks to everyone who has been part of the journey so far 🤍
If you do read it, I'd love to know what you think

We’ve been a little quiet here at Elderglen over the past few months.

Not because nothing has been happening, but because a lot has.

This season has been a hard one.

Between frost, heat, smoke and drought, we lost most of our elderberry crop. It’s one of those seasons that reminds you just how much farming is shaped by what you can’t control.

But that’s not the whole story.

The sheep are still here, the land is still teaching us, and we’re already preparing for what comes next.

We’ve been working behind the scenes refining how we grow, planning for new plantings, and continuing to build something that we hope will stand strong over time.

You may also notice we’ve stepped back from regular markets for now. This has been a conscious decision to focus our time where it’s most needed on the farm, on production, and on building sustainably.

We will still be popping up at a few markets in the coming weeks, and we’ll share those as they come.

Thank you for being here, whether you’ve followed us for a long time or have just found your way to us.

This isn’t a perfect farming story.

But it is a real one and we’re still here, growing it.

We’ve recently updated the Elderglen website to better reflect the direction of our elderberry enterprise and the systems thinking behind it.

What we’re building is not just an orchard, but a viable and resilient small-scale rural model — grown steadily and thoughtfully over time.

If you’re interested in food, farming, resilience or regional life, I’d love you to have a look.
