What if the future of Australian seafood depends on something you can’t measure?

Trust. Relationships. Collaboration.

As climate change, biosecurity risks, shifting markets and rising costs reshape the seafood industry, FRDC Managing Director Sean Sloan reflects on why strong connections between industry, science and communities matter more than ever.

Science remains the foundation. But the next chapter for Australian seafood will also depend on the partnerships, innovation and shared understanding that help the sector respond to complex challenges.

At Seafood Directions 2026, Sean explored why investing in relationships and trust could be critical to the future of Australian seafood.

I have been busy working with my national team to help Australians choose Australian seafood when they are at a restaurant or at their fishmongers. Australia currently imports 65% of our seafood, and we are hoping to turn that figure around by choosing Australian seafood .

🐟 **Fishy Education: Our Seafood Story is coming to life!** 🌊

We’re excited to give our new **Hinchinbrook Seafood Story pamphlet** a *soft launch* at the **Spotlight on Hinchinbrook** event! 🎉

👀 **Keep an eye out for it at the event** and be among the first to discover the story behind our region’s **commercial and recreational fisheries, aquaculture, local seafood, history and heritage**.

It’s all about celebrating **our fish, our people, our waters and the seafood we love** — and showcasing what makes Hinchinbrook so fishy! 🎣🦐

Come along, grab a copy, have a look and **get hooked on our seafood story!** And **let us know what you think** — we’d love to hear your feedback! 💬
