Hidden Valley Station We are a family owned cattle station in the middle of the Northern Territory, Australia

We are a breeding & fattening operation where we run Droughtmaster x Brahman cattle. Hidden Valley was brought by the James family in 1995 as a fairly undeveloped block. land type is mainly red timbered country with some open flood out country where we fatten our sale cattle. HV is approx 2800sq km and is fully boundary fenced as of 2018 and is under constant development. We are endeavouring to create a long term sustainable cattle business in a semi arid zone unsuitable for intensive farming operations.

Hidden Valley Station wishes to advise friends of the station and past team members of the passing of Mark Hawking, our cook from 2023-2026. Our condolences to his partner Lotus and his family and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

In general he was a cheeky, good natured chap, perhaps inclined to say the wrong thing in the wrong way at times but with no ill intent, a man with a heart of gold. He was known for always trying to be on time and doing whatever needed to be done to feed his team. A man who always had a job, right from the age of 14 when he started his butcher apprenticeship, to his years driving trucks, before finally stepping back into cooking for his last 15 years. He was a man who embodied what this great country once stood for. He will be missed.

We hope there is some Burbon & coke up there on ice for you Mark.

Station cook required to finish off the year in family enviroment for Hidden Valley Station N.T. Finish early December with option for 2027 season. Suitable for WHV's with cooking ability. Relaxed role cooking for 10-15people and keeping kitchen and surrounds clean and tidy. Private accommodation and bathroom supplied. Station Cook – 2026 Season | Hidden Valley Station

HVStn Management is seeking a Station Cook for the rest of the 2026 season at Hidden Valley Station, located 400km south of Katherine. The season runs through to early December (Long term position available however we take our break from mid Dec-early March traditionally).

Role:
• Meal Prep: Prepare enjoyable meals for 8–15 people daily and cater for the odd functions (Beef is a main ingredient).
• Maintenance: Maintain and clean the kitchen, BBQ area, and vegetable garden.
• Inventory: Manage kitchen stores and ordering.
• Butchery: Basic meat processing (guidance on meat cuts is available).
• Schedule: Cooking up to 6 days a week in a modern kitchen with a large pantry, cold room, and spacious prep areas.
• Adventures: Opportunities to head out with team members for those interested in seeing the rest of the operation (Optional).

One of the challenges of trying to run a remote business is being cutoff in the wet season (no fuel, food, parts or medicine in and God help you if you need medical help and can't get a helicopter out). To be fair we normally have a pretty good access, even in the wet season. Unfortunately this year we have had a couple of things accumulate at once, primarily a very large wet season along with road drains not being cleared out for repeated years in addition to having had gravel graded off too many times resulting in water not only running down the middle of the road but back and forth causing a fair amount of damage.

This isn't even the most washed out area sadly area (couldn’t reach that one). What makes this spot interesting is that it has springs and will continue running for quite some time to come. On the upside its so wet this year we aren't driving around (late start) and so don't need to buy diesel and the cattle and country are looking quite good (cattle greatly assisted by the amount of lick we feed).
