Our time testing the NEW Lyvn freeze dryer has come to an end 😭 and it’s now off to the next eager reviewer.
What stood out most for us was how easy it is to use. Just select Standard, Pre-Frozen or Candy, press go and walk away. Being able to connect to the app was a huge bonus, letting us check progress while we were out and sending an alert when the cycle finished. We also loved the self-opening vent valve – unlike the Harvest Right, you don’t have to bend down behind the machine – and we found most batches were completely dry at the end of the run, so extra time was only needed if the cycle finished while we were away.
Most of our runs took between 24 and 48 hours, with pineapple, mango and some leftovers taking the longest and herbs finishing the quickest. The medium-sized unit was a great fit for our household of three adults. Our favourite things to freeze dry were garlic, onion, herbs, strawberries and other berries, bananas, BBQ chicken and all sorts of leftovers… and yes, we even freeze dried pizza. We weren’t personally fans of the lollies, but our younger visitors voted them the clear winner. The dogs were also very happy taste testers for our homemade freeze-dried snacks.
Over the review period we put more than 30 batches through the machine and only needed to change the oil once. The pump noise isn’t excessive, but it is noticeable, so it’s best to place the unit somewhere cool where the sound won’t bother you. Our kitchen worked fine; with the door to the rest of the house closed, the noise didn’t intrude too much.
We’ll be placing our own order very soon. With everything going on in the world right now, food security really does start at home, and adding freeze drying to our preserving tool kit opens up a whole new way to store food long term. Until then, back to dehydrating for us!
