More than 160 years of history, held in one remarkable place.

A Lutheran church overlooks the Hill of Grace Vineyard. Named Gnadenberg in tribute to the Silesian homeland of the early settlers who built it in 1860, its name inspired the English translation ‘Hill of Grace’, which was given to the vineyard.

Beside the church, the ancient vines have stood through generations of custodians, their roots reaching deep into the red-brown soils of the Eden Valley. The first vines, now known as the ‘Grandfathers’, were planted by our ancestor Nicolaus Stanitzki and have become a living legacy.

Each vintage of Hill of Grace Shiraz captures the story of this special site and the season that shaped it.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 📷 Fourth-generation w**emaker Cyril Henschke with early vintages of Mount Edelstone Shiraz at a tasting marking 25 vintages in 1976.

In 1952, Cyril made his first Mount Edelstone Shiraz from the then 40-year-old vines. At a time when single-vineyard, single-varietal w**es were uncommon in Australia, it was a bold expression of his belief in the quality of Eden Valley shiraz.

The 1956 vintage won first prize at the Royal Agricultural Society Grand Easter W**e Show in Sydney, going on to win major w**e shows around the country. A grand victory for Cyril – a testament to his vision and one of his proudest moments.

This year we celebrated 70 vintages of Mount Edelstone Shiraz, one of Australia’s longest consecutively produced single-vineyard w**es. We looked back at the evolution of its label, from the rich burgundy-and-gold design created by leading artist Wytt Morro for Cyril Henschke’s inaugural 1952 vintage. By 1957, the colourful design had evolved to a simple black-and-white label, before Cyril reversed it in the late 1960s to create the iconic black label with silver lettering to distinguish his most celebrated w**es. As a lover of photography, he was fascinated by the shift between positive and negative images. A design that continues to honour Cyril’s pioneering vision.
