Bye bye Alfred! Lots of rain - about 350mm - and gale force winds from the ex-cyclone. We kept the cattle on the protected western side of the mountain so they were fine with the inclement weather; the rainforest lost a lot of leaf canopy and some medium size trees, and a few eucalypts on the forest edge lost their footing as well. Just an access track to clear, and two fences to stand up, and everything will be back to normal. Very glad we got off so lightly compared to the damage from ex-tropical cyclone Oswald in 2013. Oswald was more rain, stronger winds but the real problem was the rain came first. The soil was so wet when the wind arrived the forest giants fell. Huge swathes of the rainforest lay on the ground.

Thanks Alfred - you were kind to us. Wind first and rain second.... who would think that the order matters!!

Last light yesterday afternoon, a quiet scratch for Sonny while he nonchalantly grazed. Quiet cattle = quiet life

The last calf has arrived (minus the ear tag 😅) from our cows in an AI (artificial insemination) program of mixed breed sires.

A beautiful calf but not the coat colour we were expecting. Sire is a black Angus, Mum is a black Angus Bazadais cross. Black is the dominant coat colour over red and grey. It is possible for Dad to pass on a “hidden” red gene and Mum her grey Bazadais gene. Also possible for the AI straws to have got mixed up…. 🤔

Still beautiful. All colours welcome on the farm 💕

Happy days- the calves are nearly all “on the ground” - just waiting on one more to arrive. All the rest came thick and fast and are now 3 - 4 weeks old. Growing super fast!

I took this video a few weeks ago - when it was still Spring ... and now it is Summer ... that's what happens when you live on a farm and every day is a work day, and no need for a calendar 🙂 .
And just a tip from one of our beautiful bulls "Sonny" if you haven't worked with cattle on lush pasture before - don't stand too close 😅
