31 Nights of Horror - Day 8 - Other Mommy (2026)

Wait? What happened to Day 7? Life got in the way and I've missed it, but I'll make it up.

Trailers for Other Mommy did their job and got me excited to see the movie, so opening night I was there. It's a decent horror movie. It's really creepy, a couple of good jump scares, there is some really cool effects and cinematography. Jessica Chastain plays both the mother and the entity easily.

What stops this from being better than 3 stars is a bit of silliness that happens in the 2nd act, which feels very disjointed from the tone that had already been established. Also, I wasn't sold on the way it was resolved. Without going into spoilers, the film never really explains how the characters arrive at the solution. The revelation itself makes emotional sense given the time we've spent with this family, but the connection between that revelation and the way the threat is ultimately resolved feels abrupt and underdeveloped.

Overall, it's a mixed bag. The first half is really good, but it falls apart in the second half.

31 Nights of Horror - Day 6 - Hungry (2026) 🦛

The horror movie based on the board game Hungry, Hungry Hippos, is a treat to watch some hippos wreak some carnage. Oddly, it's set in the Louisiana bayou, but don't worry much about that either. Don't worry about the story, the characters or anything other than the rampaging hippopotamuses.

Put on some popcorn, shut off your brain and enjoy.

31 Nights of Horror - Day 5 - Beware Boiúna (2026) 🐍

This was a fun giant snake movie. It has a big damn snake, plenty of victims, some good tension and a couple of jump scares. There is a bit of an interesting story with the characters, but we're really here for the snake.

For the majority of the movie, Boiúna is covered by the jungle, or we see her massive scales slithering past, or she is out of focus, until the final scene. I would have liked to see some clearer snake shots earlier, but I understand on a small indie film you need to spend your VFX budget wisely.

Now the big question everyone will be asking, how does it compare to Anaconda (1997)? Beware Boiúna much better. Why? Because J-Lo is not in this movie. Putting my disdain for J-Lo's acting abilities aside, it's just as good. Go see it.

31 Nights of Horror - Day 4 - Undertone (2025)

This is a creepy indie horror flick. Just a woman in her apartment, recording her paranormal podcast with her friend (who is offscreen the entire movie). As they are listening to some audio files that a fan has sent in, spooky stuff starts happening.

I really enjoy paranormal horror. This was so simple, 1 person in 1 setting, and the atmosphere was executed so well through sound. It's worth a watch.

31 Nights of Horror - Day 2 Resident Evil (2026) 🧟‍♂️☣️

Zach Cregger has followed up last year's Weapons with another horror smash.

Resident Evil is entertaining from start to finish. This delivery guy is having an extremely bad day, and the more it progresses the worse it gets for him.

It's probably one of the best video game adaptations. As we follow Bryan to and through Raccoon City he levels up, getting better guns, picking up some new skills, and updating his mission. It even goes to the point of it being a first-person shooter for a small time.

It has great horror. The scares and tension are there but it's always offset with a little comedic levity just before or after to balance it out.

Resident Evil has no right being this good. I had such a good time watching this, and I honestly cannot wait to watch it again.

What the f**k was that?! - Digger (2026) Review

I think Birdman (2014) and the Revenant (2015) are great movies, so I was really looking forward to Iñárritu's new movie. The marketing has been cryptic not giving much away, but it looked very quirky and interesting. Unfortunately, I left the movie without any excitement or buzz, nor without disappointment or distain. My reaction was more of a stunned mullet thinking "what was that?"

There are some really beautiful shots, and a fantastic cast, especially calling out John Goodman as the President. Digger is an interesting and eccentric character and it was great to see Tom Cruise ham it up (in a good way) with a role that isn't an action/adventure movie.

The story though......Without giving anything away, this movie is not what its markets itself as. I get the message. I get the intent. I don't know if I get the ex*****on of it. Maybe the genius of it is well and truly above my head.

There is enough in there for me to say I like the movie, but I can't give it more than a 2.5 / 5 based on my WTF reaction. Who knows, maybe in a decade or two I'll look back and see it for the masterpiece it's meant to be.

I'm sitting down at Reading Cinemas Charlestown - Gold Class, waiting for the new Resident Evil Movie, enjoying a Solar Flare canned cocktail, vodka, passionfruit and vanilla, from Curatif.

31 Nights of Horror - Day 1

Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom.

OK, technically not horror, but Aardman have created another fantastic Shaun the sheep movie with his classic antics with a spooky, Halloween flair. Engaging for the kiddies and funny for the adults taking them with references to well-known creature features and horror films.

This was really enjoyable. It's worth a watch, and even a rewatch.

🎃 31 Nights of Horror Returns for 2026 🎃

October is almost here, which means it's time for my favourite annual tradition: 31 days, 31 movies, and a lot of sleepless nights.

Like last year, I'm making things a little more challenging by sticking exclusively to new releases, 2026 released films only. No comfort rewatches. No horror classics I've seen a dozen times. Just a month-long dive into the freshest horror, thriller, supernatural and creature-feature releases of the year.

There are plenty of films on this list I'm excited for, but my top 3 most anticipated are: Whalefall, Clayface, & Wildwood.

While Wildwood isn't technically a horror film, it's a dark fantasy from Laika and, much like Coraline and ParaNorman, looks packed with horror elements and creepy atmosphere.

Throughout October I'll be sharing spoiler-free reactions, ratings and quick reviews as I work through the challenge. Thirty-one films, thirty-one nights, and hopefully a few new favourites along the way.
