Farming involves thousands of decisions, and having the right information helps us make better ones.

That’s why we built our own on-farm app to track what’s happening across the operation every day 📱

Whenever eggs are collected, we record production numbers, bird losses, flock health and what is moving through the pack shed. Over time, this creates a detailed picture of how each flock is performing.

With so many variables involved in farming, different batches of chickens, changing seasons and different conditions, having accurate records allows us to compare results and understand what is actually working.

The app gives us the ability to monitor changes, run trials and make decisions based on what we’re seeing on the farm rather than relying on assumptions.

Good farming is built on observation, and this helps us better understand the systems we’re managing.

A new Berkshire boar joining the farm is an important step in continuing the quality of our pig breeding program. 🐖

After losing our previous Berkshire boar Felix last year, we’ve recently welcomed Baxter to the farm. Before joining the larger paddock system, he’s being introduced to the sows and given time to become familiar with his new environment.

Once the breeding process is complete, we’ll be working towards the next generation of Berkshire pigs, with the first progeny from Baxter expected to be ready in the coming months.

Each animal plays an important role in building our farm system, from maintaining heritage breeds through to producing high-quality food for our customers.

Moving the chickens onto fresh pasture each week is a key part of our regenerative farming approach. 🐓

Each flock is rotated through the paddocks to provide fresh ground while allowing previously grazed areas time to recover. The rotation helps maintain pasture health, spreads nutrients across the landscape and prevents the birds from putting too much pressure on one area.

The move also benefits the chickens themselves, giving them access to fresh grass, insects and a more diverse environment while reducing the build-up of manure and potential disease pressure that comes from staying in the same area for too long.

By managing the chickens in this way, we’re able to produce quality food while using the animals as part of the natural cycle of improving soil and pasture health. 🌱

🐕 Meet the crew that guards our chickens

Our Maremma guardian dogs play an important role on the farm, living out with the chickens and helping protect them from predators.

For us, that mainly means deterring larger birds like wedge-tailed eagles and sea eagles, while our fencing helps manage other threats like foxes and wild dogs.

Maremmas were originally bred in Italy as livestock guardian dogs, traditionally used to protect sheep, but their ability to bond with and guard animals means they can work across all sorts of systems, including goats and chickens.

Each dog has its own personality, and while their main job is looking after the flock, they definitely become part of the farm along the way.

🐾 A good guardian is more than just protection, they become part of the team.

Our grower pigs are another part of the diverse farming system we run at Forage Farms.

Alongside providing another revenue stream for the farm, pigs also play an important role in how we manage the land. They are moved through paddocks regularly, allowing us to manage their impact while giving them access to pasture, forage, shelter and fresh areas to explore.

As they grow and their impact changes, we adjust how we manage them, whether that means increasing the area they have access to or moving them more frequently.

From their shade shelters and water systems to the way they interact with the pasture, every part of the setup is designed around animal health and effective land management. 🐷

Grazing is about more than what the cattle eat, it's about how long the land gets to recover before they come back 🌾

What we run here is a rotational or time controlled grazing system. The cattle graze a paddock down to whatever level we decide, then they don't return until that paddock has properly recovered.

The reason comes down to what happens below the ground. When grass is grazed off, it loses the leaf it needs to capture energy from the sun, so it draws on its root reserves to regrow. Come back too soon and you take that regrowth before the plant has recovered, and the root system keeps getting smaller each time.

Give it full recovery and the plant regrows its leaf, gets back to powering itself through photosynthesis, and the roots strengthen rather than shrink.

There are times we graze differently on purpose, using the animals as a tool to shift the type of plants growing in a paddock, so the system is always changing.

But the focus stays the same. The health of the landscape comes first.

🐂 Why our breeder herd is a deliberate mix of genetics

Building a herd that thrives in South East Queensland is less about chasing one perfect breed and more about combining the traits that actually suit the environment.

Our breeder herd brings together a few different bloodlines, each chosen for a reason:
- Nguni, an African breed known for its adaptiveness, smaller frame and ability to do well in tropical conditions
- Boran, another African breed originating from Kenya
- Angus, for carcase and eating quality
- Droughtmaster, traditional genetics from the local area
- Brahman, for hardiness through the heat

The aim is simple. Breed an animal that performs on grass, because we want to produce beef that is grass fed and grass finished from start to finish.

But performing on grass here also means handling everything the coast throws at them. Poor grass quality through the winter months. Buffalo fly. Ticks. And the heat.

So the goal is an animal that can handle all of those pressures while still growing out into a high quality product.

🌿 The environment sets the standard, the genetics have to meet it.
