Barbaresco and Barolo! What started as a quick visit turned very subtly into ”one more night? Maybe two? A week? Maybe two?” We fell in love with Piedmont. Everything about it was warm, welcoming and delicious. Starting with a drive up the mountain of La Morra for dinner at Osteria More e Macine, to date Pat’s favourite meal in Italy.
We visited, tasted and dined at so many incredible places, it’s hard to only name a few!
Our Piedmont wine journey started with a visit to the much adored Giuseppe Cortese (4th picture) for a winery & vineyard tour, and an in-depth tasting of their current releases, celebrating their place in the Rabaja. After an amazing lunch at aromatario_neive, we made our way to meet the incredible family tirelessly working at Azienda Agricola Ronchi, led by 4th generation winemaker Giancarlo. Together with his wife (and dilligent translator) we shared wine making techniques, the intricacies of terracotta amphora, soil organics, and the ups and downs of this amazing industry across the world… and of course a few bottles of wine. (5th picture) We thank all three of these businesses for an incredible introduction to Piedmont.
Barolo Town (pictured 1 and 2) - We couldn’t go past mentioning the powerhouse gdvajra_barolo, with a detailed tour and tasting, featuring their dramatic winery featuring intricate stain glass windows, and their enviously massive underground cellar and incredibly detailed wines - everything was superb. And the infallible scarzellofede where we were welcomed like family. We had the opportunity to try some truely exceptional Barolo and Barbera in their family home, a few examples of which may have came home with us in our packs.
