🥚 THE CASE OF THE MYSTERIOUS $11 EGGS! 🕵️♂️🤣
At one of the farmers markets we attended, which we prefer not to name out of respect for privacy., something happened that left me scratching my head harder than a chicken looking for worms! 😂
A regular customer approached our stall.
👩 “How much are your eggs?”
Now, this lady has bought eggs from us before. MANY TIMES.
And EVERY SINGLE TIME, she asks the price.
Which is absolutely fine, of course…
Except there’s one tiny detail…
THE PRICE IS WRITTEN ON EVERY EGG CARTON! 🤣🤣
At this point, I’m considering installing flashing LED lights, a loudspeaker and perhaps a chicken trained to announce the prices every five minutes! 🐔📢
Anyway, I politely asked:
👨🌾 “Which size would you like?”
We only had two sizes left because our Jumbo, King Size and Super King Size eggs had already SOLD OUT!
And YES, our Super King Size eggs are so enormous that we have to buy special DUCK EGG CARTONS because normal chicken egg cartons simply cannot handle the responsibility! 🦆🥚🤣
Back to our customer…
👨🌾 “Our 700g eggs are $12.50 a dozen.”
She looked at me and delivered what I can only describe as THE BIG REVELATION OF THE CENTURY…
👩 “Well, I bought eggs here yesterday from another small farmer for $11!”
😱😱😱
STOP EVERYTHING! CALL THE CHICKENS!
Apparently, we’ve got a $1.50 emergency! 🚨🐔
Our chickens were devastated.
One fainted.
Another demanded a pay rise.
And the rooster immediately called his accountant! 🤣💰
But being a curious farmer, I asked:
👨🌾 “Really? Would you mind showing me the carton?”
There was a little hesitation…
Perhaps the carton contained classified government documents? 🤔
Perhaps it was protected by the Australian Secret Egg Service? 🕵️♂️🥚
But eventually, she showed me.
And there it was, printed on the carton…
🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
10,000 CHICKENS PER HECTARE!
YES!
TEN. THOUSAND. CHICKENS. PER. HECTARE. 😳
Meanwhile, at DOS JUANS FINE FOOD…
🌿🐔 WE HAVE JUST 600 CHICKENS PER HECTARE!
That’s approximately 17 TIMES THE SPACE PER CHICKEN!
Our chickens have so much room that some of them haven’t seen their neighbours since Easter! 🤣
One has applied for planning permission to build a granny flat.
Another wants a swimming pool.
And three are arguing about whose turn it is to mow the lawn! 🐔🏡🌿
So I politely explained the difference.
👨🌾 “Our stocking density is only 600 chickens per hectare.”
Her reaction?
😐
Nothing.
I explained again.
😐
Still nothing.
At this point, I was wondering whether I needed to draw a diagram, hire an interpreter or bring one of our chickens to explain it personally! 🤣🐔
BUT HERE COMES THE BEST PART…
I remember the FIRST TIME this very same customer visited our stall.
And do you know what she asked me?
👩 “HOW MANY CHICKENS DO YOU HAVE PER HECTARE?”
OH REALLY?! 🤔🤣
So apparently, chicken stocking density was VERY important back then…
But yesterday?
Suddenly, the chickens per hectare had disappeared from the conversation faster than our Jumbo eggs on market day! 🥚💨😂
🕵️♂️ AND NOW FOR THE SECOND MYSTERY…
I still have an email from the market organisers stating that only farmers who actually attend and keep chickens are permitted to sell eggs at the market.
Which leaves me with one very interesting question…
🐔 WHO IS THE MYSTERIOUS $11 EGG FARMER?
Is he hiding behind the lettuce?
Operating undercover among the potatoes?
Wearing a fake moustache behind the carrot stall?
Or perhaps his chickens have developed the ability to become invisible? 🥸🐔
WE NEED SHERLOCK HOLMES… OR SHERLOCK HOMES FOR CHICKENS! 🕵️♂️🤣
Now, before anyone starts throwing eggs at me…
We’re NOT accusing anyone of doing anything wrong!
But we ARE saying that there’s a BIG difference between 600 and 10,000 chickens per hectare.
And that difference matters to us.
❤️ HERE’S WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU BUY OUR EGGS:
🌿 A stocking density of just 600 chickens per hectare.
🥚 Beautiful, fresh, pasture-raised eggs.
👨🌾 Real farmers who care for their animals.
❤️ And two slightly crazy farmers who spend far too much time talking to chickens!
Our eggs might cost $1.50 more…
But our chickens aren’t interested in winning a price war.
THEY’RE TOO BUSY ENJOYING THEIR REAL ESTATE! 🐔🏡🤣
So next time someone tells you they’ve found cheaper eggs…
Ask them one simple question:
“HOW MANY CHICKENS PER HECTARE?” 🥚🔍
And remember…
NOT ALL EGGS ARE CREATED EQUAL!
Some chickens have neighbours…
OURS HAVE POSTCODES! 🤣🐔🌿
