90mm of rain in under 48 hours. 🌧️🌧️🌧️

Well I think we can safely say the ground has had a drink. 😂

Rosehaven has had 90mm of rain in less than two days, and there’s water absolutely everywhere.

The paddocks are soaked, the road has decided it would quite like to be a creek, and even the shed has joined in.

After all that rain, though, there’s something rather lovely about seeing the sun trying to break through and everything looking ridiculously green.

Farm life, sometimes you’re praying for rain and sometimes you’d quite like someone to turn the tap off. 😂

Same alpaca. I promise.

This is Ricky before and after shearing day. Ricky is a girl, in case the name threw you. Under twelve months of fleece there was a long elegant neck and a full set of legs all along.

Alpacas don't shed, so shearing each spring keeps them comfortable through summer and lets the sun reach their skin again. I've written about why it matters and what happens in the paddock afterwards, when nobody recognises anybody.

🧦 It’s Socktober! 🧦

Apparently October is the perfect excuse to talk about socks and around here, we don’t need much convincing to pick up the knitting needles. 😂

So for Socktober, I thought I’d share a little more of what’s on my needles the socks I’m making, what I’m learning, the occasional mistake that definitely becomes a “design feature”, and perhaps a finished pair or two if I actually stay focused long enough!

There’s something rather lovely about making something as simple as a pair of socks. A ball of wool, two needles, a cuppa nearby and a bit of time to slow down.

We often get asked if we are open when it rains?

Yes! We have found it can be raining then stop a bit or we just wear coats.
We only cancel if there is thunder and lightning or super wet ground anything unsafe or unpleasant for our animals..

The sheep and Alpacas stand in the rain. The donkeys and goats get under cover.

Someone is ONE today! 🎂🥳

Our little Allie is officially one year old.

In true Rosehaven fashion, there’ll be no fancy birthday party and absolutely no understanding whatsoever of why we keep telling her “Happy Birthday”. 😂

But there may be a few extra treats involved.

Some goodbyes don't happen on our own timeline. 🥹🥹

We lost our Harry while we were away on holidays, thousands of kilometres from home and coming home to a quiet house has been one of the hardest parts.

Harry was never in the background. He followed you everywhere, you could hear him walking around, scratching his bed to get comfy just right, telling you when it was time for bed because he was ready. Every car that came up the drive got a bark.

Now the house is quiet. No barking inside. No 5:30am wake up because it's breakfast time. Maddie waits so patiently with her baby bear until we get up and call her, one soft bark when she needs to go out, and it's a different kind of quiet than we're used to.
If I'm honest its earie😔

He was such a big part of our home and our days here at Rosehaven. We'll miss him more than words can really say.
