A heartfelt goodbye 🤍

And just like that… The General has changed hands.

Our journey here began during the pandemic, when we escaped the Melbourne lockdowns and bought our home in Lakes Entrance — with absolutely no plans to open a café.

What began as a little project became something far more special than we ever imagined.

It became our little corner of the community.

We’re incredibly grateful to all the local tradies who helped bring our vision to life, and especially to our wonderful staff, past and present. You were family to us. Your hard work, loyalty and genuine care for our customers was more than we could ever have asked for.

Thank you to our landlord Tony and Christine.

Massive thanks to everyone in Lake Tyers Beach, Lakes Entrance, across all East Gippsland, our local suppliers and Holidaymakers who supported us from the very beginning — for every coffee, every meal, every recommendation, every familiar face and every chat across the counter — you made The General what it became.

We would have loved to say goodbye to everyone personally, but everything happened so quickly while we were away on our annual winter holiday. So this is our chance to say thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. We feel very fortunate to have been welcomed and supported by this wonderful community.

We’re also very happy to hand The General over to Lake Tyers local Matt who has some exciting ideas and most importantly, a genuine commitment to great hospitality and this community. We wish him every success.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your lives — and for making The General such a big part of ours.

We may no longer be behind the counter, but we’re not going far.

So please don’t be strangers when you see us around this little paradise we’re lucky enough to call home. 🤍

Much love and gratitude,
Steve & Rommel

5 yrs today, we took over the keys and began renovations, stepping into a future filled with excitement, uncertainty, and more than a few sleepless nights.

It was the height of COVID, the economy was unpredictable, we were new to the area, and we were embarking on a business journey in what was undoubtedly one of the most challenging periods imaginable.

Looking back now, it has been one of the most rewarding and humbling experiences of our lives.

We’ve had the privilege of meeting incredible people, receiving kindness and support from the community, working alongside talented local tradespeople, and being welcomed with open arms. For that, we will always be grateful.

Our vision was simple: bring a little Melbourne-style café goodness to East Gippsland while championing local producers and businesses. Great food, great coffee, and a place where everyone felt welcome — somewhere the community could call their own and be proud of.

We’d like to think we’ve achieved that, and perhaps even a little more.

None of it would have been possible without our amazing team, past and present, whose hard work, passion and dedication helped shape what we are today. There have certainly been challenges along the way, but every hurdle, lesson and long day has been worth it.

As we approach our annual winter break, we’d like to say thank you to every customer, local, visitor, supplier, friend and supporter who has been part of our journey over the past five years.

We’ll be taking our winter break from 22 June until the end of August, so there’s still time to enjoy your favourite meals, catch up with friends, and grab a few more of those morning coffees before we recharge for the season ahead.

Thank you for being part of our story so far. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built together, and we’re excited for what the future holds.

See you before the break — and if not, we’ll see you again in spring. Well Hopefully… if we don’t run away that is. 😉❤️

❄️ First day of winter ❄️

What a beautiful way to welcome the season — crisp mornings, stunning sunrises, fresh air, great food, and the perfect coffee.

As the days get cooler, it’s a reminder to slow down a little, enjoy the simple things, and make time for the people who matter most. Live, love, eat, drink, laugh, and make the most of every day.

Our winter break is just around the corner, but we’re still here for the next few weeks. So come in and enjoy your favourites, catch up with friends, spend time with family, and soak up the cosy winter vibes before we disappear into hibernation for a little while.

We can’t wait to share these next few weeks with you.

Mother’s Day has had me thinking a lot lately.

I came across an old black and white photo of my mum holding me as a baby — maybe around 1971. I was probably six months old. Looking at it now, it struck me how little I ever thought about her life before she became “Mum.”

As kids, our parents can feel like they’ve always just existed for us. Then life moves quickly — growing up, proving yourself, building your own world — and somehow the questions you thought you’d ask one day never get asked.

I wish I could ask her now what she was like as a child. What her teenage years were like. What dreams she carried before life changed. She raised me mostly on her own and she did it with strength, warmth, and love… tough love at times too.

I wish she were here to see the cafe Steve and I built together. To sit at one of the tables, taste the food, have a coffee and see the beautiful community that has embraced us over the years. She was the first true foodie I ever knew — she would have loved this place.

I think she would have been proud.

This Mother’s Day, we’re thinking of all the mums, grandmothers, carers, chosen mothers, and the people who loved us into becoming who we are.

And for those missing their mum this weekend — we see you too.

We’d love to celebrate with you. ❤️
