Our first bunch of dwarf ducasse bananas! 😍🀀🍌 Ripened on the stem and some of them have even split but omg the flavour is divine! These are one of my favourite bananas and I'm excited to finally be growing some! Do you have a favourite type of banana? Have you tried anything other than the standard Cavendish? If you haven't, you're really missing out!
We had lots of bunches of lady finger bananas growing through winter but in the last month the king parrots came and decimated anything that wasn't bagged (which was most of them) so we quickly bagged up a few and I specifically wanted to save this bunch of ducasse too! I mean I want to help the wildlife out but sheese the king parrots came in numbers and ate everything, even very small unripe bananas! They know where we are now so I guess we'll have to be onto our bagging from now on!

It's the change of seasons so I have been out collecting some herbs to infuse in my tallow balms. Chickw**d is an annual winter herb so I'm harvesting it before it disappears in the heat, plantain has started popping up in the garden after being dormant over winter, and yarrow is about to start flowering.

🌿 Chickw**d is great for the skin as it has soothing, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. It's also a great w**d to eat and makes a lovely pesto or add it to your salads. We used to sell a chickw**d pesto!

🌿 Plantain is another common w**d and you'll find 2 main species - broad leaf and narrow leaf or ribwort plantain. The broad leaf one prefers wet partly shady areas I've found although it can grow in full sun. It's another anti-inflammatory herb that's known for its ability to heal wounds. It's also edible but can be quite bitter so select the young tender leaves.

🌿 Yarrow is another powerful herb for wound healing as it helps reduce bleeding as well as having anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and analgesic properties.

There's so many edible and medicinal herbs/w**ds growing right under our noses, it really pays to be able to identify them and add them to your meals for some wild, nutrient dense vitamins and minerals, or use them in your home herbal apothecary either topically or in teas and tinctures. I started studying plants about 16 years ago and i learn new things about them every day! πŸ™Œ

Yesterday whilst having lunch we noticed a down cow in the paddock. We knew one of the old rogue cows that came with the property was close to calving but also close to the end of her life so we thought maybe she'd died. Upon closer inspection we found she had calved but was in a bad way and couldn't get up. It was raining and cold but luckily we found the calf near some trees and Shmu managed to jump on it before it ran off and we got it back to the yards with some shelter and warmth. The vet came and said there wasn't anything they could really do for the cow and it was probably best to put her down which we kind of already knew. We had named her Yoko because she was a crazy flighty cow that always broke up the mob πŸ˜† but over the years she had become much tamer. At the beginning she wouldn't come closer than 100m to a person but in time she came to trust us more and was happy to be in the mob. Although most farmers would have probably tried to get rid of her asap as she was a bit of a nuisance, getting her in the yards and on a truck was a whole other problem! In the end she was a good cow and gave us 5 calves over the years, the last being this gorgeous bull calf. If we hadn't seen her down when we did we might have lost the calf too so at least some good came of her death. He's happy in the yards having had colostrum and now learning to drink milk from a bucket... Look at his tail wag while he's drinking! 🀩 We haven't hand raised an orphaned calf since the first year we moved to the valley 11 years ago when we got our oldest cow Sprout so it will be a lovely experience for the kids! What do you think we should name him?

Colours in nature are so beautiful! 🀩 This black turmeric I harvested has such vibrant blues and greens you don't often see, it was even hard to get the camera to capture them properly! I'll be using this black turmeric in one of my tallow balms for muscles and joints. This is a lesser known variety but still full of curcumin, the compound responsible for its amazing anti-inflammatory properties that help with arthritic joint inflammation, pain and stiffness. Some studies suggest it has higher concentrations of curcumin and other bioactive compounds than yellow/orange turmeric and I'm excited to see how it can help muscle and joint pain!

Not only is the oven good for baking sourdough, it's great for rendering tallow! I'm in the process of finalising my recipes for different herbal infused tallow balms I want to make. I've recently been getting arthritis in my fingers so I'm particularly keen to make a good joint and muscle balm... Watch this space! πŸ‘€
