The South Australian Poultry Association (SAPA) would like to remind all poultry keepers to remain vigilant and ensure good biosecurity practices are in place following recent detections of H5N1 avian influenza in wild birds within Australia.

At this time, there have been no detections of H5N1 in commercial or backyard poultry in South Australia. However, the risk of introduction from wild birds means it is important that everyone who keeps poultry take sensible precautions.

We encourage all poultry owners to:
πŸ” Keep poultry separated from wild birds wherever possible.
πŸ’§ Prevent access to ponds, dams or water sources that may be used by wild birds.
🧼 Clean and disinfect footwear, equipment and vehicles before and after visiting other poultry properties or shows.
🚫 Avoid sharing equipment between flocks unless it has been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
πŸ‘€ Monitor your birds daily for any signs of illness or unusual deaths.
πŸ“ Report any unexplained illness or sudden deaths to your local veterinarian or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Good biosecurity is our best defense against avian influenza and helps protect not only your own birds, but the wider poultry community.

SAPA will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as information becomes available from the relevant authorities.

Thank you to everyone for doing their part to keep South Australia's poultry healthy and safe. Together, we can help protect our birds and our poultry fancy. πŸ“πŸ¦†πŸ¦
