In 1999, an American teacher in China saw a television report about a woman trying to stop a desert from swallowing her home.

Her name was Yin Yuzhen.

She and her husband were planting trees by hand in Inner Mongolia, fighting the sand one tree at a time.

Ronald Sakolsky was moved by her story.

He spent two months raising money and eventually gathered $5,000 to help her buy seedlings.

At the time, that was a huge amount of money for the family.

Yin used the money for what she had been fighting for all along: planting trees.

Then Sakolsky returned to America.

The two lost contact.

Twenty-seven years passed.

In May 2026, Yin posted a video online asking for help finding the American teacher who had helped her when she was struggling to stop the desert.

They found him.

When they spoke again, Yin had practiced English so she could tell him one thing:

“You are my brother.”

She also told him what happened to his $5,000.

The saplings had grown into a forest of more than 50,000 trees.

In August, Sakolsky finally returned to Inner Mongolia and reunited with Yin in person. He walked through the forest that had grown from the money he donated nearly three decades earlier. (People’s Daily Online)

They planted another tree together.

What began as $5,000 from a teacher who simply wanted to help became tens of thousands of trees standing where there had once been shifting sand.

Sometimes you never get to see what a small act of kindness becomes.

Sakolsky waited 27 years.

Then he finally saw it. 🌱

One year after a friend of the Carmel of Elijah came to a Planting Water Workshop at THE Hungry Spirit in Lightning Ridge, this is the abundance the women have bloomed.
This is most certainly something to be celebrated!!

The months are just flying!

Dave Well is our September Artist in Residence with thanks to Regional Arts Fund, Regional Arts NSW. He will spend time immersing in his craft and in this community before he headlines our show on 26th September.

He will be joined by return artists Out of Abingdon and of course, the talented locals and visitors who are supported by the Tin Camp Studios stage to share their talent too.

These are special nights under the big sky.

Another successful Planting Water workshop at THE Hungry Spirit with incredible people from all over Australia and some wonderful locals too!
Thousands of plants in the ground and kilos of biomass harvested from the property as our own mulch.
Lots of paradigms shifted and hearts full.
Our goal is to develop self sustainable systems of abundance that are optimised for the semi arid conditions 😀 we are right on track with so many hands and hearts aligned.
Thanks to our teacher and mentor Thiago Gimenez Barbosa.

It's RAINING!

Of course it is.

Our Syntropic Farming workshop called 'Learn To Plant Water' starts on Friday.

Last year the 30+ students planted hundreds of trees into 6 inches of rain!

I wonder what will happen this year? We are certainly getting a good ground soaking which will make hole digging a bit easier!

We ran our first workshop in 2020 and it rained after years of drought...and for every workshop since, except 1, there has been good rain either before or just after the workshop - in one instance it started raining the hour after everyone left!

We now affectionately call Thiago Gimenez Barbosa the rainman!

Coincidence?

Maybe. I am on the fence!

We still have places available and offer a substantial discount to locals, if you are interested we'd love to see you!
