This pullet here is 5 months old and growing in her next lot of feathers, I’ve highlighted the difference in colour. Initially she was gold as a juvenile and now that she’s 5 months old you can really see the mahogany coming in.

It really does pay to hang onto young birds as long as possible.

Breeding season is around the corner! I can’t wait 🐣 🥰

Here’s a video I took of all my females lined up in Development class at the Lismore WCA Nationals.

They all scrubbed up pretty well I thought 🥰

So, I got a comment worth discussing...
She deleted it, but it's an important topic, so let's not sidestep it:

Yes, I sell my "culls".
Potential buyers should be aware that they come out of a program with a high bar for health testing and that breeds toward the written standard of perfection by the APA (American Poultry Association). The standard describes the ideal Sebastopol in structure and appearance. Since the bar is "perfection", all geese will naturally fall short, even my very best goose. But, the goal remains the same- move as close to that standard as possible so we can preserve the integrity of the breed. To reach this goal requires a lot of hatching and only holding onto the very best offspring each year.

Potential buyers should also be aware that I raise my goslings on 22 acres of rotated pasture to maturity when they are old enough to be evaluated against the standard of perfection. This allows me to match them appropriately to prospective pet or breeding homes. Many times, my culls can also be used to help another breeder improve their program. I built my entire breeding program from other more established breeders' culls.

The result is that potential buyers receive a healthy goose that comes out of a program breeding intentionally. Most importantly, they get one that matches their flock goals. If they want to know why I am not keeping that goose for myself, all they have to do is ask. I'm happy to give my full analysis and also willing to advise breeding options if that's the goal for the goose.

"Cull" can be a dirty word, but it doesn't translate to defective or problematic. They are a natural result of breeding toward a goal. If you maintain a high enough standard, even "culls" have value.
