A few photos from the very beginning of Tasman Sea Salt.
Back in July 2014, we harvested our very first tray of salt at Little Swanport. We were learning as we went — and looking back, there was quite a lot to learn.
Our first saltworks had everything in one shed: the crystallisation pan, dryer and packaging machine. It didn't take us long to discover that putting freshly dried, hygroscopic salt in the same room as a lot of moisture was not our best idea.
Our first evaporator was basic and slightly homemade. Our systems were a work in progress. And Chris and I both looked considerably younger.
But the salt itself? Those first batches produced the same pure white sea salt flakes that we still harvest here today.
A lot has changed at the saltworks over the past 12 years. We've learnt, adapted and refined how we do things, while continuing to work with the same extraordinary natural resource that started it all — the pristine ocean water here on Tasmania's east coast.
It's quite something to look back at where it all began.
