Ah, the joys of checking the inbox ๐Ÿ“จ

โ€‹Sometimes, an enquiry brings a genuine smile. While we completely understand the desire to avoid surprise roosters in the backyard, this one gave us a little chuckle.

โ€‹To gently clarify the terminology for anyone just beginning their feathered journey: dayold chicks can be "sexed" (which means they are professionally sorted to guarantee females by skilled sexers, or genetically bred to be sexed by down colour and markings), but they are never "desexed" (surgically altered like our beloved cats and dogs) at that age.

โ€‹We always appreciate the enthusiasm of new keepers and are more than happy to help navigate the fascinating, and sometimes confusing, world of chicken terminology.

โ€‹So, if you are thinking of becoming a chicken breeder, the number one qualification would definitely be ....."patience". ๐Ÿ˜‚

We really hope this is just an isolated case ; not into other wildlife, farms or our backyards.

This is a particularly difficult time of year to be dealing with bird flu(IF it spreads) in Australia, as many backyard flocks are already struggling with other respiratory outbreaks due to the cold, wet weather.

Stay vigilant, everyone.

โ€‹The handsome fellows you see on our feed were carefully selected from groups of 10- 20 birds per breed. Even so, they are not entirely flawless; we constantly see areas for improvement. Letโ€™s be honest, we also make sure to share only their most flattering angles.

โ€‹Please keep in mind that hatching eggs from the exact same line does not guarantee a perfect replica. Nature always has a mind of its own. Genetics can occasionally produce unexpected throwbacks, hidden faults, or simply less than ideal traits. It is a fascinating, highly unpredictable, and sometimes wonderfully frustrating endeavor, but that is the reality of it. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ“

"I donโ€™t have a rooster, but I can see a fertile circle in my henโ€™s egg!"

โ€‹We get this question quite often from those new to keeping chickens.

โ€‹Every egg produced by a healthy hen will feature a small white spot on the yolk, scientifically known as the blastodisc. Because hens are biologically equipped to lay eggs regardless of a rooster's presence, this little spot is always there. In an unfertilized egg, this white dot simply appears fuzzy, irregular, and somewhat opaque.

โ€‹When an egg is truly fertilized, that spot transforms into a blastoderm. The shape becomes much more defined and uniform, taking on a distinct "bullseye" pattern. You will often notice multiple concentric rings(usually up to three) with the outermost ring displaying a faint, almost glowing halo. This is the tiny cluster of cells patiently waiting for the perfect incubation conditions to begin developing.

โ€‹So, the next time you crack open a breakfast egg from your husbandless hens and spot a white dot, rest assured there are no surprise chicks on the way, there is absolutely no need to panic! ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ“
