South Australian beekeepers are facing the biggest threat our industry has ever seen.
Varroa destructor is spreading, and based on what has been seen worldwide, up to 90% of feral and unmanaged hives will be lost once the mite becomes established.
Mite levels build over time, but once they surge, colonies can go from healthy to dead within weeks.
Across Australia, industry reports show around half of beekeepers are expected to leave the industry as costs, labour and colony losses continue to rise.
Our honey prices are increasing because we don’t keep bees to profit — we’re trying to soften the burden and save a critical insect that our food system depends on.
Supermarket honey is cheaper for a reason:
Much of it is imported, blended, ultra‑processed, filtered and heated.
Independent testing has found some imported blends adulterated with sugar syrups, meaning what you’re buying isn’t always pure honey.
Local honey = real honey
Local honey = supporting SA beekeepers
Local honey = keeping pollination alive
