Yesterday was the DGSWA WA Branch Show at Kelmscott Agricultural Show. Geoff Blinco judged and it was a most enjoyable day, despite a 3am start.

Dandalee Park exhibited 33 goats in 29 classes. Im elated to announce we won 29 x 1st placings, 17 x 2nd placings and 11 x 3rd placings.

Understanding 24 Hour Milk Awards

I recently posted a list of DGSA milk awards. On reflection I suspect some newer enthusiasts may not fully understand them. Put simply individual goats milk production is measured using independent monitors over a strict 24 hour period. The milk is weighed and samples taken and analysed for butterfat and protein. If a goat exceeds predetermined benchmarks for milk quantity and quality it may be eligible to claim an award. Bench marks are different for standard breeds and Nigerian dwarfs but principles are the same. Points are also awarded for time - days since a doe kidded.

Types

Q* -pronounced Q star - is a o primarily a measure of milk quality

* - pronounced star - bonus for higher quantity production

Both have minimum standards

You can potentially achieve both awards, either at one test or over several different tests.

Together you may achieve both - * Q*

Only need to achieve once, linked to that does registration number indefinitely.

In addition recognition is given for the number of consecutive female generations achieving a 24 hour milk award and denoted as Q* (1st generation), Q*2 (second generation), Q* 3 …….and so on. Dandalee park has does with *Q*13 - meaning 13 consecutive generations of the female line have milk awards. However, Once broken, you revert back to Q*.

Milk testing is a great way of assessing milk production now and historically. I’d strongly encourage enthusiasts to consider undertaking it and looking for it when researching potential new acquisitions.

Dandalee Park strives to breed productive dairy goats - standard breeds and Nigerian dwarfs. As part of our breeding program we assess both milk production and milk quality through 24 hour testing. This test involves monitored weighing of milk produced in a 24 hour period. Samples are collected and sent off for independent analysis of butterfat and protein content. Under the DGSA milk awards program, goats exceeding predetermined benchmarks can apply for awards. Below is a table of the results from our recent test. Hoping others might find this of interest.

Dairy goat exhibition is receiving awesome media coverage including Channel 7 Rural TV feature last week and today it’s featured in both the North Coast Post and http://postnewspapers.com.au .

Hopefully it helps encourage new enthusiasts to take up this wonderful pastime and motivate sponsors and venues to continue their much appreciated support.

It’s been a huge week at Dandalee Park. Attended the 2026 Perth Royal Show exhibiting our dairy goats. Very pleased and proud of our small herd, highlights including Supreme Junior Exhibit (Thursday), Supreme Senior Exhibit (Friday) and then being awarded the WA Governor’s Cup (Saturday). The Governors Cup has been awarded since 1896 to the most prestigious award at the Royal Show and is awarded to the most successful exhibitor of livestock at the show. This is our fourth win of this very competitive and illusive award.

I must thank all those that helped and supported us to enable us to attend and compete. In particular, Paul Carter, Nancy, Veronique, Anthony and the team of vet students assisting us at the show. Here are a few photos of our team. I hope you enjoy the pics. I’ll endeavour to add details in the comments.
