Bulla Burra is a collaborative family farm formed in 2009 by the joining of two family farms owned by the Gladigau and Schaefer families in the Alawoona / Loxton region of South Australia. Since that time it has expanded to be producing wheat, barley, canola, chick peas, lupins, lentils, field peas and canola on 11,000 ha of owned, leased and sharefarmed land.

It’s not often you have problems like this in the Northern Mallee. This year our May rainfall was 91mm surpassing the local 1910 record of about 85mm. January to end of May rainfall was 261mm smashing the previous record of about 165mm. We actually had a few areas it was too wet to sow, but we’re not complaining because the area is insignificant & there is more money in mud than dust. After three challenging years of drought & frost, this year has got off to a rip roaring start.

Well that’s a wrap, season 2026 planting completed. Well done team, a great effort from everyone. Thank you. Only 1 week behind schedule despite an amazingly wet May, nearly always finishing farms just after dark (which required having to wait till morning for a major road movement), many hours repairing and double sowing land damaged by last years drought, staff sickness, and a few breakdowns thrown in for good measure.

With 46mm of rain here over the last two days, added to the huge rains in February/March, our yard is quite wet, in fact too wet for one of the pine trees in our driveway, whose roots couldn’t hold on.

Last night the ratchet level adjuster in the centre of the 1870 bar broke. A new one cost $1600, after market much less, but both were a day away. I did a remanufacturing job on it, took a few hours, it’s now stronger than before & we are going again. 👍

We started sowing lentils on April 14th, emerging only 7 days later. They are pushing along nicely now with a more even germination than I first thought.

I found this little critter on the spinner of the fertiliser spreader when I got out to check over the machine. He must have made his home in an old tarp I had used to cover the hopper & dropped out into the spreader. He was feeling a bit sad & stunned. As I was holding him he climbed up my jacket and decided to take up residence in my coat pocket. When I got home I hung my coat on our veranda, I checked just before I went to bed & he was still nestled in the pocket. He must have recovered overnight as this morning he was nowhere to be found.

Alongside the ever increasing costs of production and poor commodity prices, our region has faced some significant challenges the last three years with some of the lowest rainfall on record and severe frosts. Due to these challenges we are restructuring our business to reduce debt & risk. As a part of this restructure we are selling some of our land. Ideally we would like to find the right person who is interested in investing in land with a view to lease it back to us in a long term arrangement. If this is of interest to you please reach out to Nigel or Olivia as per the Facebook post below.

We got the sprayer stuck on a sand blow yesterday. The trusty Triton came to the rescue & got him out though.
