Scharwyn Charolais

Scharwyn Charolais Focused on breeding cattle suited to today's markets. Cattle are ran in conjunction with a small Simmental stud (Ancra) as well as a sheep and cropping program.

In order to fit in with a busy work schedule of shearing and wool handling/ classing, all cattle must be easy doing and able to thrive in paddock conditions. This being essential in an environment of 220mls average rainfall.

One of the very few calves that will drop early this year with the decision being made after a poor season in 23 followed by an extremely poor 2024 to give the girls we've managed to keep through a well deserved break. Fingers crossed by the time they're ready to drop in Nov/Dec there's an abundance of feed and stubbles to carry them over summer.

Prepping for the walk back over the highway for marking and deciding on some of their futures.

Considering the challenging season and very sad state of feed paddocks, the majority are holding on pretty well.

The AI program is on hold this year and Tambo will cover both breeds as one mob due to paddock and feed availability. Nervous times ahead and fingers crossed a decent rain just around the corner, when the 2500acre block is fully destocked, 7500acres is struggling to support 650 sheep and 50 head of cattle (some with calves) on 2000acres (boxed up and running on what was supposed to be crop/stubble) is feeling a touch sketchy. 111mm in 2024 hasn't left much soil moisture to play with and are exceptionally thankful that we're on underground water even if it's 180ft+ below us and salty.

Who doesn't love being a farmer in challenging years.

Long walk back for the Charolais that get to stay.... 25 cows and 8 hfrs. Simmies faced the same fate without the walk.... 22 cows and 6 hfrs.

Night time cattle moves, on their way to yards to decide which 25 lucky girls get the tick to stay.

Weaning and deciding which girls head off Tues as we continue to reduce numbers.

The fate of the T and U females still undecided with options of agisting, hooking or feedlotting being discussed.

Last of the AI calves hit the ground sired by LT Countdown, LT Ledger and Keys Powermax for the Charolais and Nichols Manifest for the Simmies.

Due to selling a large number of breeders mid year there were only 6 females to calve to AI sires, 2 Simmies and 4 Charolais. All 6 took first round AI and resulted in 1 bull calf and 6 hfr calves with a set of twin hfrs from a Simmie hfr.
