Thunder Hill Estate is a registered Poll Dorset stud ( #4605) and a prime lamb operation located in the extremely high rainfall prime grazing land just south of Macclesfield in the Yarra Ranges, Victoria. ue micro climate supports lush purposely sown perennial rye, tall fescue, clover & chicory pastures, where our animals are ethically and sustainable pasture raised watched over by flock guardian alpacas and maremma dogs. In early 2017, Thunder Hill successfully underwent the rigorous MLA Livestock Production Assurance producer certification, and in doing so adheres to very low stress animal management practices. The property was specifically designed to ensure maximum bio-security, and as a result achieved Australian fastest Ovine Johne's Disease MN3-V accreditation (1 of 21 in Aust) and Victoria’s Ovine Brucellosis free certification. To ensure good health, strict vaccination and drenching programs commence in the animals first year to provide a strong start to life and continues regularly. During lambing, ewes are provided a locally responsibly sourced grain, vitamin & mineral mix to help support the rigours of early motherhood. Pain relief is administered at marking, by the early adoption of Numnuts (11th user in Aust) and orally via Buccalgesic, no hot knife is used. The flock is ‘gone round’ every day to monitor for any signs of ill health or injury. We strongly believe in farming transparency, understanding where food comes from, and connecting city to country. Regularly, orphaned lambs are provided free to Melbourne’s community farms to help connect city kids to farm animals. To help you connect with us better (if you wish) we can provide full background for the animal in front of you, or more generally about the property. We can inform you as much or as little as you’d like, please just call us. The lamb in front of you has been fed no special diet in a ‘finishing program’, no artificial substances (hormones) or stuffed full of grain to gain weight, and has no knowledge of what a feed lot is, just wide-open free range paddocks and great quality grass. It has lived well and stress free. It is some of Australia’s finest 100% pure poll dorset genetics, lovingly cared for by a mix of artisanal and modern farming practices. Rewired the trailer today. Two things I learnt 1. My hands are too big to make a good auto electrician, 2. Electrics take much longer than previously thought, 2. I don’t have the patience for electrical work, 2. Electrical work sucks.
