🐂 3 Day Sickness 🦟 - Bovine Ephemeral Fever

Is a viral disease of cattle which is spread by mosquitoes and biting midges. It is called 3 day due to the signs of disease usually lasting for 3 days.

Clinical signs include
🦟Depression
🦟lameness, muscle stiffness, twitching, shivering
🦟drooling saliva, runny nose, watery eyes
🦟recumbency
🦟reduces water and feed intake

Prevention relies heavily on vaccination with products such as the Ultravac BEF. This vaccine is only available with a vet script and is currently in very short supply.

Treatment options include
🐂anti-inflammatory drugs which have been seen to reduce the course of the disease
🐂most animals given access to water and feed will recover
🐂electrolyte replacements such as the 4 in 1 Flopak Plus and Vytrate can also be used to assist

Regular crop checking is essential to detect pest populations before they can cause significant crop loss.

A fantastic turn out for our Nutrien Mackay’s grower information evening 🌱🎋

Presentations included an insight into the fertiliser landscape and its implications for the short and medium term in the Mackay district presented by Darren McGrath.
The main thrust of the evening was the introduction of Structure as the new generation liquid planting fertiliser for sugar cane.
Darren McGrath and Heidi Stephens delivered a very interesting presentation where they explained the Outstanding Phosphorus Availability that application of Structure at planting has.
Dan Gonzales from DAF presented information on the application of imidacloprid.
Gerry Dogao from DLF finished off the evening with a short snapshot of the seed varieties and availability.
Feedback from growers was very positive.

They gained valuable knowledge in the identification and management strategies of various sugarcane diseases.
