Pomegranate Lamb Shoulders Are Back for Rosh Hashanah

Pomegranates have a traditional place on the Rosh Hashanah table, expressing the hope that our merits in the year ahead will be as numerous as their seeds.

With Rosh Hashanah approaching, our seasonal Pomegranate Lamb Shoulder is back.

Each bone-in lamb shoulder, approximately 1.4–1.6kg, is coated with a rub of pomegranate molasses, sumac, cumin, black pepper and lemon juice. Vacuum-packed with cooking instructions, it makes a beautiful and straightforward centrepiece for your Yom Tov table.

Fifty Years Behind the Counter with Stephen

If you’ve walked into our Glenferrie Road shop over the past five decades, chances are Stephen has served you.

Fifty years ago, he joined Continental Kosher Butchers. What began as a job became a life’s work.
When asked what Continental means to him, his answer was simple:

“It’s my life.”

That says a lot.

Stephen has seen generations come through the shop. Parents buying meat for their children. Those children returning years later, now buying for families of their own. The same greetings, the same counter, the same commitment to doing things properly.

For Stephen, quality is not a slogan. It is the work. It starts when the meat arrives, continues through the preparation, the cabinet, the customer taking it home, and the meal that follows.

That is where the real continuity sits. In the family that comes in for Shabbos meat, the children who grow up with those meals, and the moment they return years later to buy for families of their own.

Fifty years is no small thing.

Thank you, Stephen, for the care, consistency, and heart you have given this place and this community.

At our 80th anniversary celebration, we reflected often on the people, institutions, and relationships that help shape Jewish life beyond the walls of our own business.

That story does not stop at the Victorian border.

For many years, Continental Kosher Butchers has had the privilege of feeding Jewish families and institutions in Sydney through our supermarket and wholesale partners. So it meant a great deal to play a part in supporting this year’s Moriah College Music Camp

Now in its incredible 37th year, this camp is a massive undertaking, bringing together over 300 students from year 4 all the way through to year 12. A camp like this speaks to something we know well: young people coming together, learning, growing, and finding their place within something bigger than themselves. Teachers, tutors, and parents all putting in the work to make it possible. And then, when the rehearsals pause and the instruments are packed away, everyone gathering around the table to eat, recharge, and share the day.

We often say that businesses are built through people and relationships, and food is our ultimate love language. That is why the true heart of this camp shines through the parents who volunteer their time to cater every single meal. Cooking for a small army of around 450 people including the students, dedicated teachers, parent volunteers, educators, visiting musicians, conductors, and alumni is a tremendous labor of love.

We know that those meals matter. They are part of what people remember afterwards. They help turn a camp into a real sense of community.

That is why it resonated with us so strongly. For 80 years, our work has been about helping sustain the rituals, traditions, and shared tables that keep Jewish life connected across generations. To be able to contribute in some small way to an experience like Moriah’s Music Camp, where the next generation is building friendships and Jewish connection in a very real way, is something we are proud of.

Mazel tov to Moriah College, the dedicated staff, the committed volunteers, and every student who helped make this year’s camp such a success.

Today, our Quality Assurance team are attending the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology Convention.

Meat production, especially ready to eat products, carries real responsibility. Food safety is not something we treat as set and forget. It requires current knowledge, strong systems, careful record keeping, and a team that understands the details behind the work.

For us, kosher integrity and food safety sit side by side. Different responsibilities, both non negotiable.

After 80 years in business, we are still learning, refining, and bringing that knowledge back into the way we work at Glenferrie Road and across our production sites.
