⚽️Soccer on the Mountain ⚽️🌳

Amongst Westy’s collection of Mountain memorabilia – we came across this pristine copy of the very first Mountain District Soccer Club newsletter dated May 1996.

Though the club went back a lot further, launching in 1978.

The opening of the Mountain District Sports field in 1986 was a big milestone for soccer.

Reg, along with Eddie Grant, Roger Wilson and Kaye Whitehead were the key drivers in making that happen.

I hope you enjoy reading the newsletter and it brings back lots of memories. 😊

The plum trees are bursting into blossom and it's one of our favourite sights of the year. 🌼🐝

Before we dive into the busy season — October garlic harvest, the Country Fair and a big summer ahead — we're taking a **September siesta**. 😴🌾

Following on from last week…
After the Hawkins family wrapped up their long chapter in local bus services in late 1978, Somersby Bus Lines (Leishman family) took over their routes.

Not long after, in mid 1979, Sam Calleija stepped in and launched Kulnura Bus Lines. He purchased the Gosford Schools to Kulnura, Central Mangrove and Mangrove and the Central Mangrove & Kulnura Public School runs.

By 1982, he added the Old Sydney Town service, which many will remember from the days when Pyes Bus Service ran it.

Kulnura Bus Lines expanded again in June 1998, taking over the Gosford Schools to Calga–Mt White and Peats Ridge Public School runs from Pyes.

After three decades of serving the Mountain community, following in the footsteps of Hawkins and Somersby, all runs and vehicles were sold to Busways on 10 July 2009.

Who remembers riding on a Hawkins bus?🚌

A little while ago we shared Reg’s memories of catching the school bus driven by Joe and Darby Hawkins and asked if anyone had old photos tucked away.

Who do you recognise? 🤔

Back in 2003, a `Back to the Mountain’ day was held at the Memorial Club.

Of course, the unofficial Mayor of Mangrove Reg was one of the MCs.

Reg’s brother Bill and sister Mavis were also there.

The event was organised by Ken West, Colleen Bruce, and others with an interest in local history.

The event was a big success with lots of people coming along to share their memories.

Hope you enjoy seeing some faces from the past – some sadly are no longer with us.

🌳Mountain Familes ..Ray Walpole part 2🌳

When World War II broke out, 23-year-old Ray Walpole from Kulnura put farming on hold and volunteered to serve his country.

His daughter, Lorraine Wilson, recalls Ray delayed enlisting by just one week so he could finish his tomato crop. That decision changed his life. By the time he reached Sydney, he couldn’t find the Mountain mates he’d intended to join with. These mates would later die in the Pacific campaign.

Ray went on to serve for more than four years in the Middle East and Papua New Guinea with the Army's transport division. After suffering a back injury when a bomb exploded in a bunker, he was eventually medically discharged and returned home in 1944. This injury would plague him until he died in 1999 at 82.

During the war, Ray managed to secure a 21 day leave pass - just enough time to return home to marry his sweetheart, Joan Gibson.
Back on the farm at Kulnura, Ray's parents, younger siblings and local farmer Ted Rowe kept the property running during the war, growing produce that was sold to the Army.

Keeping watch over it all was Mick, Ray's loyal dog, who would escape and find his way back to the farm when the family tried to take him back with them to Gosford.

After the war, Ray and Joan managed to buy an additional two adjoining 20-acre blocks from the Hunt’s estate, expanding the family farm and continuing a legacy for future generations, including Lorraine and husband Roger.

Lorraine recalls her dad cherished the friendships he made during his service and growing up there were always plenty of honorary Army Uncles visiting.
