We had such a fantastic Harvest Festival Central Coast weekend at Bennett’s Farm - a huge thank you to everyone who popped in to buy our local produce. πŸŠπŸ‹πŸ†πŸ₯šπŸŽƒ

It was especially nice to see some family members make the trip, including Reg’s youngest great-grandchild Joey and his sister Mackenzie.

We even had Tanya Bennett and her brother Michael Bennett join us - not related, but we always love meeting fellow Bennetts!

The girls from Vellandetti Pty Ltd called in to buy some produce – they bring their delicious Maltese and Italian goodies up the Mountain each month. John couldn’t resist buying their cheese (no surprises there!).πŸ§€

Thanks also to cousin Tony Bennett for bringing the old W4 tractor around - it was a big hit with the kids… and one big kid in particular (looking at you, Reg Bennett !) who enjoyed a turn in the driver’s seat.

And how could we forget young William and his very popular lemonade stand? We absolutely love supporting young entrepreneurs - especially when Bennett’s lemons are part of the business model! πŸ‹

We also must give a special shoutout to our amazing local suppliers - you kept us going all weekend. People love the high quality of Mountain produce, and we truly appreciate your support.

It was a really special weekend and we’re already looking forward to next year… and we’ve got some great new ideas brewing!

Mountain Legend meets NRL Legend πŸ‰πŸ˜

We had a great first day of the Harvest Festival Central Coast yesterday!

So many people called in to buy our fresh Mountain produce.

One special visitor was NRL legend, NSW State of Origin rep, and Australian representative Mark 'Spudd' Carroll who dropped in to grab some fresh Mandarins. 🍊

Mark was absolutely brilliant β€” he took the time to have a great chat about footy with our very own legend, Reg Bennett, and even shared some of his new brew, Spud Wiser. 🍺

It's moments like these that make Bennett's Farm so special.

Thanks for stopping by, Spudd! πŸ™Œ

When Hilton bought Bennett’s Farm, just 5 of 80 acres were cleared - around where Reg’s shed stands today.

In the late 1930s, another 8 to 10 acres was cleared by hand by our caretaker Tom Cartwright and his son using a Trewhella winch to pull the trees over.

The winch was invented in late 1800s in rural Victoria by the Trewhella brothers to help clear land and handle heavy timber.

After the war an old Army bulldozer owned by Bowers and Laird went from farm to farm clearing land.

`Nearly everyone got some clearing done,’’ Reg said.

Later, dozer operators like Tiger Clarke and George Joyce came through the area.

But Reg and Bill still needed to clear land by hand on both the Wisemans Ferry and Bloodtree Rd farms.

``You would put a cable up as high as you could around the tree – it was surprising what we could pull with the W4,’’ Reg said.

They then cut them up by hand using a two-man crosscut saw – with an odd stick of jelly (Gelignite) to the blow out any stubborn stumps.

A jack, like the Simplex monkey jack Reg still has today, also came in handy when clearing trees.

πŸ“ŒIf you are coming the Harvest Festival this weekend – call in.

βœ…οΈWe have the old jack and W4 on display – and of course on Saturday our walking Mountain history book Reg will be there.πŸ˜„

At Bennett’s Farm we are always looking at new ways to do things, however sometimes 'if it ain’t broke, then don’t fix it'.😁

If it gets the job done - whether it’s a tractor, a pump, or even a ladder - why replace it?

When Hilton and Iris moved to the Mountain in the 1940s, one of the first jobs after the house was completed was building a shed.

Hilton brought in builder Arch Hastie (a brother-in-law of Hilton's brother Doug Bennett from Viitaslo Rd in Somersby), and together they sourced whatever materials they could during the wartime shortages.

The round Stringybark posts came straight off the farm.

The hardwood framing was supplied by the Walker Bros in Gosford.

Corrugated iron was scarce after WWII so Hilton could only get enough for the roof - the walls were finished gradually over the next few years as materials became available.

Later on, Bill added the extension using steel posts.

To build that shed, the builder needed a ladder.

So Hilton bought a hardwood extension ladder made by L.T. Kennett Ladders, a mid century Australian manufacturer based in Darlington, NSW -famous for their beautifully made ladders, trestles and step stools.πŸͺœ

Back then, things were built to last and that same Kennett ladder is still on Bennett's farm today.

After 80 years it is still solid and still useful. (Though we do grab the aluminium ladder for the really high jobs!)

What old gear do you still use around your place? πŸ€”
