As a truffle grower it is critical to have good knowledge of fungi and their relationships. A study of the fungi fruiting in your trufferie will allow an appreciation of the health of your truffles. This may allow you to manage your trufferie to ensure better production. For example, in this area Armillaria luteobubliana is endemic. It is an agressive pathogen of living trees. Shown here in its full glory after overcoming its host. The other fungi featured is Trametes versicolour. It is saprophitic. It is antagonistic to Armillaria. By intoducing Trametes versicolour to old stumps the amount of Armillaria may be reduced in the trufferie. This is another task we undertake in our trufferie, to ensure we dont get bored.

Every trufferie begins with land preparation. In this case the last 3 hectates of the Sauvignon Blanc is removed and burnt to release the cordon wire. Next will be agricultural lime and cultivation. Planting will probably be around 18 months away. Trees need to be grown and inoculated. Irrigation planned and installed. Soil leveled and grape vine roots removed. Farming is a long term project. Good planning and steady progress towards the goal is the key. The longest journey begins with the first step.

Brules indicate truffles are colonising well and ready to begin production. This trufferie began production last season in year three. Early production augers well for heavy production. Truffle trees freshly planted. A well grown well inoculated tree will have the energy to grow in the first season. Critical for early truffle production. Production in year three is possible if establishment is good. Note no tree guards or w**d mulch is nessecary. These often add extra cost and work for little gain.
