A small pocket of Western Australia, the Southern Forests region is one of incredible variety and abundance, and its status as one of the nation's premier food bowls is growing everyday. The Southern Forests locals have known about it for years; in this gorgeous, pristine part of the world, something magical is going on. Or the extraordinary fertility of the soils. Maybe it's the 365 growing days

of the year, or the purity of the rainfall. Or maybe it's a combination of all these things. Truth is, no one is really sure. But what we do know is this. Every time you bite into an apple, or slice an avocado, or you're tempted by a truffle, or any of the wondrous vegetables, meats, fruits and nuts that are grown in the Southern Forests region, you'll be left with no doubt that this array of fresh local produce simply looks, smells and tastes better. THAT'S A GENUINE EXPERIENCE. The Southern Forests Food Council was formed in 2012 to foster the Southern Forests region as one of the nation's key future food bowls and culinary tourism destinations.

National Dog Day is a good excuse to give some well deserved recognition to the farm dogs of the Southern Forests.

Loyal, hardworking and always ready to be part of the action, farm dogs are often right alongside their people from early mornings in the paddock to long days on the farm.

They know the routines, keep an eye on the livestock, lend a hand when needed and somehow still find the energy to follow you wherever you go.

They are working dogs, companions and an important part of farm life.

Today, we’re celebrating the four legged farm hands who help keep Southern Forests farms moving.

Happy National Dog Day to the good dogs who never clock off.

Blood oranges are wonderfully versatile, but if you’re looking for a little morning tea inspiration, this one is hard to resist.

Our Blood Orange & Almond Cake makes the most of those zesty, vibrant blood oranges, with thin slices baked over a moist almond cake until soft and lightly caramelised.

Fresh blood orange zest and juice bring plenty of citrus flavour, while almond adds a little richness to the cake. It’s simple to make, easy to share and a lovely way to enjoy this vibrant seasonal fruit.

Jason and Jodie Omodei are busy building a story of their own at Jase Farms near Pemberton.

Alongside their other work and commitments, they have spent the past five years developing their farm and growing a young citrus orchard of vibrant blood oranges, flavourful lemons and grapefruit. It is a hands on journey that takes plenty of time and a willingness to keep learning as the trees develop.

Citrus is fast becoming a fruit to watch in the Southern Forests, with the region’s growing conditions helping produce fruit with colour, flavour and character. Jason and Jodie are part of that emerging story, building their knowledge and their farm along the way.

Blood oranges, taking citrus to the next level. 🍊

With their striking colour and vibrant flavour, this exciting zesty fruit is making itself at home in the Southern Forests.

And our climate has a part to play in that incredible colour. Blood oranges contain naturally occurring pigments called anthocyanins, which can develop more strongly under cooler conditions. Those cold Southern Forests nights can help bring out the fruit’s signature red colouring, with the intensity varying depending on the variety, growing conditions and the season.

Citrus is also adding another layer to the incredible diversity of produce grown across the Southern Forests. As growers continue to explore crops and varieties suited to the region’s unique growing conditions, blood oranges are a vibrant example of just how much can be grown here.

And while their colour might steal the show, they are just as exciting in the kitchen. Eat them fresh, squeeze them into juice, toss them through salads or use them to bring a sweet, zesty hit to seasonal dishes.

Western Australia's bees are doing more than making honey. They're helping keep agriculture moving.

Recently, more than 7,500 WA beehives were transported to South Australia through a commercial agreement facilitated by WA beekeepers to support pollination. It is a great reminder of the strength of our state's beekeeping industry and the importance of maintaining world leading biosecurity.

Here in the Southern Forests, bees play a vital role in food production. Pollination is essential for crops such as avocados, cherries, apples, blueberries and many other fruits, helping growers produce the high quality fresh food our region is known for.

Healthy bees support healthy harvests, making them some of the hardest working contributors to Western Australia's agriculture.

Every hive on the road is helping secure the future of food production, both here in Western Australia and beyond.

Prosecco was very nearly renamed in Australia as part of trade negotiations between Australia and the European Union. An agreement reached earlier this year means Australian producers can continue using the term 'Prosecco' for wines sold domestically, so the sparkling wine Australians know and enjoy will keep its familiar name.
