Glen Holme Snapshots around Glen Holme Manoora SA, including farm life and our Dohne and Poll Merino sheep studs

Situated in the beautiful Gilbert Valley, in the Mid North of South Australia, Glen Holme Dohne Stud is owned and operated by multiple generations of the Kelly family at Manoora, SA. Selected genetics have been introduced into the stud over the years in the form of ewes, rams, and semen, from southern, eastern and western Australia, providing a diverse range of genetics. Our aim is to breed a type

of sheep that maximises profitability for our clients, as well as for our own commercial flock. We see this as a sheep that is highly fertile and has a balance of quick growth rate to market weights with minimal supplementary feed and high quality bright wool. Sound structure of backs, shoulders, legs and feet is another high priority of ours, given that a self replacing ewe flock is one of the best features of the breed, and makes a huge impact on the profitability of a sheep enterprise.

As this little lamb came through for tagging and pedigree recording, we couldn't help but smile as we entered the details.
You see - the mother is 23-7722 and the sire (father) is 23-7772, and the lamb 25-5516. In keeping with tradition of mum and dad, their coloured tag (on farm management tag) is CA227.
Now that is lots of 2's and 7's in their identity and pedigree - a dyslexics nightmare in keeping all those numbers straight for accurate data collection and recording.
Good thing EID tags and readers are here to minimise this human error!

Whilst we welcomed the rain, the cold wet conditions combined with the wind chill were not so pleasant for the expectant ewes and young lambs.
Because we have no control over the weather, we try to ensure each of the lambing paddocks have shelter. In many instances we build these from straw.
Over the weekend I snapped a number of lambs snuggled up away from the worst of the weather.

Glen Holme – serving up something refreshingly different for ram sales.
Beer or B.E.E.R.?
Beer: an alcoholic beverage made by brewing and fermentation from cereals, usually malted barley, and flavoured with hops and the like for a slightly bitter taste.
B.E.E.R: Best Environmentally Evaluated Rams
- Our focus is less about the beverage and more about breeding and genetics.

As the rainfall accumulates this year and the country-side changes from browns to green, I thought I'd look back at how the rainfall is measuring against long term average for the farm.
The chart below, whilst a little complex, shows cumulative rain for long term (orange), 2024 (green) and 2025 to date (blue) with the scale on the left. The grey shaded area behind shows the average monthly total and the distribution throughout the year, scale on the right.

We are thankful to have had a supply of straw to feed the rams, it was a popular addition today.

Every day the ewes and lambs need some good feed. As you can see, it is still dry here.
