Last night, one from the cellar, Firetail Wines second vintage of Merlot, 2004, under natural cork that left the bottle in pristine condition but not reusable, great nose of forest floor, violets with a hint of smoke, beautiful colour, bright, rich reds, and delightful on the palate, rich and full. Perfect with a New York Strip of steak for dinner.

The 2004 Firetail Merlot is available from the Cellar Door, call in or phone if you would like to partake of this delightful vintage.

Our 2025 Firetail Cabernet Sauvignon was bottled mid February this year and has been on tasting and on sale in the Cellar Door since we got it home a day later. It is in the line of every vintage of our Cab Sauv, we are delighted to have them on tasting when they are incredibly young. The wine is delightfully smooth, has a beautiful crimson hue, a tremendous nose and an elegant treat on the palate. Like all our Cab Sauv vintages since 2011, it is without hard tannins straight out of the barrel so no fining required.

Autumn in the vineyard is a great time of year, the crop is safely harvested and the leaves on the vines are a constantly changing visual feast.
The vine in this photograph is a great example of how we soil layer a long cane from an established vine to make a new vine to fill in a gap in the row. The old vines restrict the growth of new vines except when it is one of their own leading to the 100 percent success rate of this method.

Remembering my dad, Donald Calder Glass, today along with all who have serviced in and out of uniform. Dad is pictured on the Airforce Base in Canada in WWII, bomber navigator with the RNZAF. Learnt to fly in Tigermoths at Harewood in Christchurch. I am on a mission today to find dad in the photo.

Friday 17 April, International Malbec Day

The 2025 Firetail Malbec is crafted from 295 Malbec vines in a single vineyard mixed with 10% field blend of whites from the adjacent Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blocks. The grapes are whole berry, wild fermented with partial carbonic maceration, basket pressed and barrel matured for a period of 8 months. The only intervention before bottling is a 1 micron sterile pad filtration. This delightfully soft, luscious mouthfeel red is ready to drink, we have had it on tasting and for sale in the Cellar Door three days after bottling.

$27 a bottle or $270 for 12

Only available at the Cellar Door, call Rob on 0409080711 to order.
