Margaret River Wine Providing support, education and promotion of the Margaret River Region winemakers and growers.

The Margaret River Wine Association was started by a group of winemakers in the late 1970’s. The Margaret River Grape Growers & Winemakers Association as it was known then, was incorporated in 1982 and at that time had only a handful of members. The charter of the Association has remained constant over the years – primarily to represent the interests of the Margaret River wine industry and promote Margaret River wine. The Association was one of the first groups in Australia to register a geographic boundary for our region in 1996 and Margaret River was one of the first three wine regions in Australia to have its boundaries legally defined by the Australian government. On behalf of Margaret River Wine Association members the Board is explicitly responsible for the governance, stewardship and future well-being of the Association and the progressive attainment of its constitutional objectives whose overarching strategic focus and intent being: “To consistently position Margaret River as one of the world’s most compelling regional fine wine experiences.”

The Boronup Forest, just south of Margaret River town is home to towering Karri trees, and during the springtime, stunning wildflowers too. This unique spot is the furthest west that Karri trees grow - they can grow around 60 metres or more in height.

Western Australia has its own heritage clone of Cabernet Sauvignon, which arrived in the 1850s, and is widely planted in the vineyards of Margaret River. Called 'Houghton Clone' this Cabernet often displays lower vigour vines, lower yields and smaller berries, lending towards classic blackcurrant and cassis characters with a lovely density and less herbaceous notes. Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon tends to be medium bodied, very perfumed and elegant in style, with powdery, emery-fine tannins and balanced acidity.

Compared to inland w**e regions, Margaret has a low diurnal temperature range, uniform heat accumulation, low seasonal variation and a overall milder climate. The influence of the ocean is evident in the compelling elegance of the w**es, brought about by cooling breezes which allow for the retention of fragile aromatics and flavour compounds.

Margaret River is located on a spectacular coastal pocket in the secluded south-west of Australia. Its ancient granite landforms are amongst the oldest on the planet and ironstone gravels abound. Here, the powerful Indian and Southern Oceans meet, engulfing the land with the energy of fresh, salt-kissed air that has flown clean and untouched for thousands of kilometres.
