My new Queen arrived in the mail today and is in her new home and will be laying soon.
Australia is the world leader in Queen bees and ship all over the world. This one is a Queenslander!

I split my native hives today for the first time in almost 2yrs. I normally leave them to it but the hives were quite heavy and healthy so it was a good opportunity to take a look. The way they build hives is unreal and a real treat to see. I even took a little native sugarbag honey…the most special prize in all of beekeeping.

Just think…a single bee will produce 1tbsp of honey in its lifetime, and they are 47tbsp in a 1kg jar. It’s staggering how much work goes into this perfect food!

Tiny eggs laid in each cell grow into larvae and finally a bee emerges to start work. With a lifespan of 14-28 days and only 1 teaspoon per bee produced (142tsp per kg), a healthy hive with a good egg laying Queen is crucial to good honey flow.
