Father’s Day cakes at Woolworths have been decorated with the enthusiasm of a teenager being told to unload the dishwasher! 🎂

Nothing says “Love you, Dad” quite like icing slapped on during the final 30 seconds of someone’s shift! 😂

EMMA’S BAKERY WINS BALLARAT’S PEOPLE’S CHOICE PIE AWARD
Emma’s Bakery owner Emma Conroy has taken out the 2026 Ballarat’s Best Pie People’s Choice Award, with customers voting her Meredith Dairy goat deluxe pie their favourite of the competition.

Emma’s creation came out on top against 29 other entries, while Mrs Browne Bakes finished second with its banana and honey miso caramel Gold Fever hand pie. Sovereign Hill’s slow-cooked blade steak pepper pie placed third.

The public-voted award was separate from the competition’s judged grand prize, which went to The Shared Table for its Sher Wagyu Pie.

This year’s Ballarat’s Best Pie was the biggest in the event’s history, with more than 23,000 pies enjoyed across the city during August.

The month-long celebration attracted locals and visitors to 30 participating venues while showcasing Ballarat’s hospitality businesses, local produce and increasingly impressive food scene.

Congratulations to Emma and the entire Emma’s Bakery team on winning the public’s vote! 🏆

Taking home the People’s Choice Award is a tremendous achievement – particularly in a record-breaking year filled with outstanding and wonderfully inventive creations! 🥧

A much-loved Ballarat eatery recently celebrated a special milestone, with Eclectic Tastes Café & Pantry marking 10 years under the ownership of Jane! 🎉

Jane took over the business from Margo Petit a decade ago, continuing the story of a café that has now been part of Ballarat’s hospitality scene for almost 25 years.

Reflecting on the milestone, Jane said hospitality had been part of her life for decades, despite once being convinced she would never work in the industry.

“I was the little girl who grew up around it, absolutely convinced I would never work in the industry,” she said.

“Yet here I am, more than 25 years after opening my first business, still feeling incredibly fortunate to do something I genuinely love.”

Jane said the past decade had not always been easy, particularly through covid, but the challenges had never taken away her love for the industry.

“Despite the challenges, I have never lost my love for welcoming people through the door, serving beautiful food and coffee and creating a place where people feel welcomed and at home,” she said.

She also paid tribute to the staff, suppliers, tradespeople, fellow business owners and family members who have supported the café over the years.

But much of her gratitude was directed towards the Ballarat community and the customers who have made Eclectic Tastes part of their lives.

“Whether you have joined us for your morning coffee, celebrated milestones with us or simply stopped by for a chat, you have helped create the community that has made Eclectic Tastes so special,” Jane said.

And perhaps the line that sums up the milestone best: “Celebrating 10 years of Eclectic Tastes feels less like celebrating a business and more like celebrating a community.”

Congratulations to Jane, her family and the entire Eclectic Tastes team on a wonderful decade! 👏🏻

The Nationals candidates for Bendigo East and West, Andrew Lethlean and David Hutchings, have visited the Salvation Army’s Hilltop Café, sharing lunch with volunteers.

The pair praised the café for providing far more than food – describing it as a welcoming place where people can connect, share stories and support one another.

Hilltop Café provides free community meals every Monday and Thursday from noon until 1pm at 65-71 Mundy Street, Bendigo.

“Bendigo is a stronger and more caring place because of organisations like The Salvation Army and the volunteers who generously give their time to help others,” they said.

A warm meal can make a difficult day easier – but sometimes the conversation, company and simple feeling of belonging matter every bit as much.
