A diary entry from 1899 describing end of vintage tasks, read by our cellar hand Jimmy.
The diaries began in 1891 with the Kay Brothers, Bert and Fred Kay, and are part of a continuous record of the winery, vineyard and life on the property for over 130 years.
Jimmy and the team have been filling barrels this week in much the same way as the entry describes.
The entry reads ‘Racked cask 41 into hogsheads for sending to Mill.
Tested strength of casks 38 and 39, tanks 1, 2 and 4 and ‘99 Frontignac. Filled up ‘99 wines.
H Kay went to council meeting at Noarlunga and to McLaren Vale where he got 9 lbs sulphuric acid from Hardys and got cart saddle and ordered collar from Ferris. Also got Rajah shod at Furlers.
