Pinot Noir has been around since the first century.

That's not a marketing claim. That's actual history. While the Romans were still figuring out plumbing, this grape was already established.

It made its way to Australia eventually, settling into the cooler regions where it has half a chance of keeping its cool. Because Pinot Noir is the introvert of the w**e world. It doesn't like heat. It doesn't like rush. It likes a long, gentle season and someone who'll let it take its time.

We did a small batch. Some experimenting. A few decisions that could have gone either way.

And we're genuinely happy with it.

It's lighter than our reds usually go. More delicate. More subtle. The sort of w**e that doesn't fill the room but definitely fills the glass.

Here's what people forget about Pinot Noir: it's not just a red. It's the major grape in ch*****ne. You can make white w**e from it. Red table w**e. Sparkling. We do a sparkling Pinot Noir that's been quietly winning people over for a while.

It's versatile in the way that only ancient varieties seem to be. A few thousand years of adaptation will do that.

Perfect for summer. Light enough for a warm afternoon, interesting enough to keep you coming back.

Spain had Tempranillo first. But McLaren Vale's been doing it justice for about 15 years now.

The climate match is almost embarrassingly good. Hot summers, Mediterranean conditions, same deal. The variety picked McLaren Vale and settled right in.

It's an early pick variety, one of the first ready each vintage. Bright, vibrant red fruit with a round, generous mouthfeel. Lighter than your Shiraz, more substance than your Pinot.

If Grenache is your thing, Tempranillo lives in the same neighbourhood. Similar weight, same kind of approachability, just a different character.

Good middle ground w**e. Worth pouring a glass.

The w**e truck's coming tomorrow.

Mark's been in the barrel hall all week, topping barrels, bringing the ones that need bottling to the front, emptying them, washing them out, and refilling them.

Not the glamorous side of w**emaking. Just the side that has to get done.

The Tiberius is moving to the 2022 vintage. Most of the Shiraz too. And the Cavalier Cabernet 2021 blend has been put together in the tank, ready to load onto the truck first thing in the morning.

Then it's wash barrels, refill, repeat. Plenty of forklift runs. Plenty of tasting. All of it in service of getting w**e into bottles before Christmas.

Every vintage is a bit different, the weather sees to that, but the process stays the same. Fruit character. Barrel ageing. Time and care.

The truck arrives tomorrow. The bottles are waiting.

This is Mark checking in on something with a bit more weight behind it: an icon w**e in development.

The kind of w**e that doesn’t get rushed, doesn’t get waved through, and definitely doesn’t get approved because everyone’s keen to go home.

Glass up.
Light through the w**e.
Barrels in the background.
Very serious face.

Some w**es are made to be opened young and enjoyed straight away.

Others spend a little more time earning their place.

This one is still writing its story, and Mark is keeping a very close eye on every chapter.

Mark's in the warehouse, packing w**es for Japan.

First trip over. Two cities: Osaka, then Tokyo. A Small Batch range, a few icon bottles, and a Shiraz that apparently doesn't need much of an introduction.

Six of each. Carefully selected. Off to meet some distributors and see if McLaren Vale can make a few new friends.

Mark's never been to Japan. He's mostly excited about the food. Can't say we blame him.

Grenache might just be the great peacekeeper of w**e.

Originally from Spain, now very much at home in McLaren Vale, it has quietly become one of those varieties that everyone seems to find their way into.

Big red drinkers like it because there’s flavour.
Lighter red drinkers like it because it doesn’t try to blow your head off.
And everyone in the middle just gets to enjoy the ride.

Our Small Batch Grenache comes from over 100-year-old, dry-grown bush vines: old, rugged, stubborn vines that have been standing their ground for longer than most of us have been making questionable life decisions.

The result?

Generous fruit.
Good colour.
Great concentration.
A beautiful acid balance.
And that easy, effortless drinkability that makes Grenache so dangerously likeable.

It’s not trying to be the loudest w**e in the room.

It’s just the one everyone ends up coming back to.

Last days in oak for our Cavaliere Cabernet Sauvignon.

After three years quietly hanging out in barrel, soaking up structure, tannin and all the good stuff, it’s nearly time to move on.

The bottle is calling.
The oak farewell tour has begun.

Not a bad little retirement plan, really.

Shiraz does not need much of an introduction in McLaren Vale.

It is the classic.
The heavyweight.
The reason a lot of the world first looked at Australian w**e and went, “Right… they’re serious.”

And our Small Batch Shiraz takes that classic McLaren Vale power and gives it a modern Curtis twist.

Bold, generous, smooth, and very easy to get along with. The kind of Shiraz that brings the deep fruit character without making you wrestle it first.

Mark describes it as generous red fruit, an almost sweet mid-palate, a smooth back end, and that lingering feeling that hangs around just long enough to make you reach for the glass again.

It has that old-school McLaren Vale soul: a little nod back to the great Shiraz styles of the past, but with a fresher, more modern fruit lift.

Basically: if you love Shiraz, this one knows exactly what you came for.

Tom heard whispers.

Not ghost whispers. Not cellar-door gossip.

Chardonnay whispers.

Somewhere between Ben and Mark, something golden and long-awaited has started moving again! And after a very long Chardonnay silence at Curtis, it sounds like we may be getting close.

Meanwhile, the new vintage Small Batch Grenache Shiraz has officially left the building and is off getting bottled, ready to return like a newly forged weapon from the fires of vintage.

So yes, things are happening.
