Do you know the blind spot of a tractor can stretch up to 15 meters?

The blind spot is not just behind you, it's in front too. Anyone standing in that zone, a worker, a family member, a child, is completely invisible from the cab.

You sit high, there's no rear-view mirror doing what a car's does, and implements, loaders and tanks swallow the sightlines. The bigger the machine, the bigger the zone you can't see. And the danger hides in the everyday moves: pulling away, reversing, repositioning around the yard. Someone can step into that space in the time it takes to look down at a lever.

Half of all child deaths on farms involve machinery. And more than a THIRD of the children who died were visitors. The kids who come to our farms for the holidays and don't know the dangers the way we do.

That's the hard truth. The hazards we've stopped seeing: the tractor reversing, the little one on the ute tray, the quad bike we tell ourselves they're big enough for, are exactly what catch kids out. When you've worked a place your whole life, the risks become invisible. To a child, they were never visible in the first place.

And it shifts with age. Young kids are most at risk as bystanders and passengers. Older ones the moment we let them start operating machinery themselves.

Growing up on a farm means growing up around risk. Vehicle safety, fi***rm safety, silos, dams, fire and chemicals. Jannik Blair doesn't sugar-coat it: "It is honestly an insanely long list, because there are a lot of hazards."

The VFF Making Our Farms Safer Project has teamed up with Real Skills Ag Training to run a series of free, practical preharvest safety workshops across regional Victoria, covering everything from machinery and fire risk to fatigue, powerline safety and grain handling.

"Harvest is when small risks can quickly become serious incidents," said VFF President Ryan Milgate. "These workshops are about making sure farmers, growers and their teams are prepared before the pressure hits, knowing where the risks are, communicating clearly, and making sure everyone goes home safely."
