Meet Karin Blakston. At 86 years young, today she and her family enjoyed a tea and scone right beneath a piece of her own history. Back in 1964, the legendary Australian photographer Mark Strizic captured her image—a stunning photograph of her shopping at The Block Arcade that now permanently hangs in the iconic THE BLOCK ARCADE Tea Rooms 1892.
The sweetest part? Her grandchildren are regulars in the city, and every single time they pass by, they stop to blow a kiss to their Nanna. ❤️
Time passes, but some memories remain beautifully frozen in time.

At The Tea Rooms 1892, high tea is still an occasion.

The pot of tea. The tiered stand placed at the table. The small cakes made to be admired before they are eaten. Choux pastries, neat pinwheel sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, and all the little details that make you slow down.

It is a tradition that feels especially at home here, surrounded by the history of The Block Arcade and served in a room that has welcomed generations of Melbourne visitors.

A beautiful ritual, one small bite at a time.

Our cakes at The Tea Rooms 1892 has a way of stopping people in their tracks.

Layered sponges, glossy finishes, piped cream, fruit, chocolate and all the details that make choosing just one feel almost impossible. It is part of the ritual of visiting The Block Arcade, pausing at the window, looking closely, then finding your way inside.

Since 1892, The Tea Rooms have been woven into the story of the Arcade, serving generations of visitors in one of Melbourne’s most historic and beautiful settings.

A little ceremony, a little sweetness, and a very Melbourne tradition.

As seen in

This Block Arcade darling is a paradise for anyone who loves proper pots of perfectly brewed tea, ridiculously small sandwiches and high pomp in surroundings that channel the spirit of Queen Victoria. High tea is a time-honoured occasion here (be warned: it’s a personal challenge as well as an outrageous indulgence), or submit to no dictates and opt to go pie-eyed over a selection that might include (deep breath) hibiscus cheesecake, New York cheesecake, cookies & cream cheesecake and passionfruit cheesecake. In short, if it’s cheesy and cakey, you’ll most likely find it here.
