Yarra Falls Evening spot in heart of the city, telling a story of local talent in food, refreshments, music and culture. Come for the snacks; stay for the good times.

We want to tell a story of people and land along the river known as the Yarra. Be that in the food on your plate, the w**e in your glass or the music overheard, we're majority sourcing from as local as possible, and from the best from the world where we cannot. Where the river meets the sea, we'll change with the seasons of this part of the country. Our venue is on the land of the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung, of the Kulin Nation: it always was and always will be. We pay thanks and respect to their elders past, present and emerging.

Since almost day one, Yarra Falls has ‘paid the rent’ by donating 1% of revenue, not profit, to the Koorie Heritage Trust

Our guiding ethos of centres acknowledgment and (consensual) sharing of Indigenous heritage + knowledge. We use so many good native ingredients but knowing what’s good (and what won’t kill you) rests on tens of thousands of years of Indigenous history.

It has been an immense privilege to learn the history of this land along the river Birrarung; to work to the rhythm of the Eastern Kulin calendar; to share native language names; to understand hospitality + welcome through that lens.

Our team was humbled + delighted to be invited on a guided tour of Birrarung Marr this week. Bladen was an informative + authentic guide, and a top chap all around.

GOOD NEIGHBOURS MAKE GOOD FRIENDS

This is Marc + Carlo, who’ve been running Tavistock House Cafe for 17 years.

Being a small operator, can’t always be around for when the delivery drivers turn up (looking at you, Paramount…). These guys have signed for more liquor than I have these past five years.

Always friendly, always happy to pump one last long black at end of the day, there have been the best of neighbours + the soul of hospitality. Thanks guys.

‘Y A R R A G R O N I’

Welcome to

This pearler of a Milano classic has been on our list non-stop since pretty much Day One: we are selling it at 2022 price of $20 all week.

Hits all the right buttons of bitter-sweet + boozy but sessionable enough (if you drink your water).

Every iteration has been a combination of locally produced:

GIN (Brogan’s Way Distillery - a family operation in Richmond, Melbourne; Brogan herself is one of the most gifted distillers out there. Period.)

SWEET VERMOUTH (Maidenii - the most boundary-pushing vermouth producer we’ve ever known. Based out of country VIC, they got smashed badly in Harcourt bushfire last year so we’re double happy to include their product.)

BITTERS (we use Saint Felix Distillery from Mordialloc, just down the coast. Nice people, making a dryer, fruitier style compared to the traditional.)

Of course, it’s all pulled together with ice + dilution using Melbourne tap water, the best in the world.

All week, under the waterfall.

After an action-packed five years, Yarra Falls will be turning off her waterfall on Saturday, 3rd October. Doors from 4pm.

This is not one of those posts where we go on about why: it’s a post to say thank you, so very much to everyone who shared the Culannwilam ethos; who backed us to build a bar during a pandemic; who worked at + patronised this bar; who shared knowledge with us; showed grace + patience to a small operator; allowed us to learn humility + feel pride.

We’ll get a more effusive over the next week, we’re sure, but five years on (a little fatter - a lot wiser), we ask you to come by for hot bread, cool tunes, great drinks + good times, under the waterfall, one more time.

Go raibh mile ma agat/ thank you very much

This lil nugget is a Sydney Rock oyster, from Wagonga, NSW. Medium umami, medium sweetness, high minerality. Absolute PEAK season.

Have one or twenty, until midnight every day.

N E W K O S M O S

3 Arches Modern gin + blood orangecello + native pepperberry + fresh squeeze OJ

We’ve had a great time working with Three Arches Distilling ultra-small batch gin. As a Melbourne lad, Peter draws on his Greek roots here in one of the great diasporic Greek cities. Think Macedonian juniper and Greek tea.

The earthy gin sits beautifully with late-season fresh orange, local Sundays Distilling blood orangecello and the fragrant heat of native pepperberries.

Spurrell Foraging supply us with the whole dried pepperberries, that grow in cool, temperate conditions from Lutrawitra/Tasmania all the way up through Victoria to Barrington Tops, NSW. Apparently, currawongs love the stuff.

The name is a nod to Neos Kosmos , the longest running Greek language publication in Oz. So many stories on this part of the country.

‘BUSHMILLS X STORYTELLING’

We had a pretty special afternoon here yarrafalls couple of Sundays ago. In the spirit of the special month of August under the calendar do the Eastern Kulin Nation, we gathered to tell stories, eat, sup and connect.

Matt Castle mkcas_tle guided us through the premium range of Bushmills Wh***ey Australia single malt Irish wh***ey, including a surprise in the guise of Bushmills Causeway Collection Moscatel cask. Thanks Matt!

One of our owners, the Irish one, regaled guests with stories from the great Irish mythological cycles of the Fianna and the Red Branch. We learnt of the Salmon of Wisdom; how Cuchulainn got his name; and of course, how legendary giant, Fionn mac Cumhaill created the world famous Giant’s Causeway on the Antrim Coast.

Everyone tucked into snacks found in the stories themselves: smoked salmon, hazelnuts, boar, honey, fresh baked loaves.

Thanks as always for knowledge shared about this land here, that originated with consent from Kulin elders.

Let’s do it again soon.
