One day, this will be the view you miss most.

A little reminder to take the photo from your perspective.

Not the perfectly posed picture. Not the one someone else takes of you breastfeeding.

The one where you look down and see them.

The view you’ve watched through countless breastfeeds... the one no one else ever gets to see.

Because one day, your breastfeeding journey will come to a close.

Years from now, this is the view you’ll want to remember.

Take the photos.

One day, they won’t just be pictures.

They’ll be a doorway back to one of the most precious seasons of your mothering.

The view only you ever had.

Save this as a reminder for yourself, or share it with a breastfeeding mum or mama to be.

A landmark study found that the ar**la skin is significantly warmer than the surrounding breast tissue (Zanardo & Straface, 2015)

This difference was statistically significant. Researchers proposed that this warmth acts as a thermal cue, helping newborns locate the ni**le during the breast crawl.

Combined with scent from the Montgomery glands, the warmer ar**la provides another sensory signal guiding babies to the breast.

A simple reminder that breast pump shield fit matters.

A package client messaged yesterday morning with friction damage to the ar**la from an incorrectly sized breast pump shield. We adjusted her shield size and I recommended applying my Ni**le Butter regularly to soothe and protect the damaged tissue.

Just 24 hours later, the area is much improved.

If you’re expressing, make sure your breast pump shield is professionally fitted, it can make all the difference.

And if ni**le damage does occur, having a tin of Ni**le Butter on hand can be a lifesaver.

After a morning of telehealth appointments, I took myself out for coffee.

This past week all of my telehealth appointments have been antenatal breastfeeding consultations; helping pregnant mums prepare for breastfeeding from the comfort of their own homes 🙌🏻

One of the many benefits of telehealth is being able to access personalised support wherever you are.

Plus Medicare rebates are available.

A simple positioning adjustment can make a world of difference when it comes to breastfeeding.

See how this baby is trying hard to attach, but lying on their back makes it more difficult? Imagine trying to have a drink yourself with your head turned to the side. It doesn’t feel right hey?

Babies breastfeed best when they are in alignment. This position would be improved by rolling the baby onto their side, so mum and baby are chest-to-chest and tummy-to-tummy; then once in alignment they can tilt their head back, open their mouth wide and attach more effectively.

Sometimes it’s not about trying harder, it’s about positioning differently. Partners can be super helpful here too, often spotting positioning adjustments from a different perspective.

Save this for your next feed and/or share with a parent who might find it helpful.

No client appointments.

No messages.

Just family, good company and recharging for the week ahead.

Work/life balance is such an important part of private practice if you want to avoid burnout.

It’s one of the many things I teach inside my mentorship, The Midwife Entrepreneur.

Now that my Mentorship, The Midwife Entrepreneur, has finished for 2026, I have the pleasure of introducing each one of the incredible mentees who took part this year. Over the coming weeks and months, I’ll be sharing their stories, businesses and the beautiful work they’re bringing into the world.

To kick things off, here is Kate, Registered Midwife and the heart behind Elara Lactation.

Some words from Kate:

“I created Elara Lactation for the families who want to feel prepared, not overwhelmed. Who know birth and breastfeeding are natural, but also know they can feel big, tender, uncertain and full of questions.

My work is about helping women and families understand what is happening in their bodies, what to expect in the early weeks, and how to feel steadier before they are holding a newborn at 2 a.m., wondering, “Is this normal?”

I have postgraduate study in diabetes education, which has shaped a special interest in supporting families in which pregnancy, birth, feeding, and metabolic layers all sit within the same story. I care deeply about helping parents feel informed and reassured, while always encouraging care that works alongside their midwife, obstetric, GP, and diabetes team.

I am currently working through the pathway toward becoming an endorsed midwife and IBCLC candidate. My current client work is centred on birth and breastfeeding education, while I continue building toward expanded breastfeeding support in the future.

Elara Lactation currently offers birth and breastfeeding classes for families who want calm, practical, evidence-based education before baby arrives.

Helping you understand what to expect, what is normal, and when to reach for support, so when birth and feeding begin, you are not trying to make sense of it all for the first time.”

Elara Lactation is based in Perth, Western Australia, with education available locally and online.

Warmest congratulations Kate on completing the Mentorship, making a strong start to stepping into private practice, and becoming a 662movement Approved Professional 👏🏻
