ITV Taste of Origin. Points Vs The People- Meet our second Masterclass host - Jane Faulkner

Jane is one of the esteemed judges of the famous Tasting Panel - and the bible that is the Halliday. She's a journalist by training and wine writer by vocation, starting her career in newspapers, later working at The Age/The Sydney Morning Herald, and also in TV and radio. She is a sought-after wine judge, locally and internationally, and chairs numerous shows. A long-time contributor and columnist for Halliday magazine, she has been reviewing for the Companion since 2016. She is highly respected for her honesty, fairness, rigour and independence in her writing and tasting. And, she's great mates with !

There's a fantastic article from Jane where she remembers the misfortune of being stuck next to a snobby git at a wine dinner in Beaune – yes, the epicentre of Burgundy. Oozing pomposity, he informed her he only ever drinks Premier Cru or Grand Cru. She burst out laughing and almost fell off her chair. After recovering her composure, Jane reeled off dozens of wines at the other end of the price and diversity spectrum, such as nebbiolo from Piedmont, German riesling, Australian chardonnay, Spanish tempranillo and more. So be prepared for the unexpected- she's a modern judge, open-minded, pro-producer and a hell of a lot of fun. We are so honoured she agreed to be a part of this event!

ITV Taste of Origin- The biggest game of the year is not on TV....

This battle of the bottle will be hectic- it's the people vs. the points. Jay Bessell – sommelier, wine whisperer and man of the people is in one corner, bringing the front-of-house flair – reading the room, pairing to the plate, spotting value and wines with cult potential.

He's against one of the sharpest palates in the game, and one of the most influential wine judges in Australia- we will introduce you to her next week.

Together, they'll guide you through six wines, pit states against each other, debate their picks – and let you decide the winner with a People’s Choice vote.

Do points have relevance when context is taken away, are natural wines funky or faulty, can warm climates produce correct French varietals, do labels matter?

This great debate, together with next-level snacks from the Rochey is your ITV Masterclass. 6pm SOLD OUT, 7PM almost sold out, and some tickets left for 8pm!

ITV Taste of Origin- The New Recruit

Representing NSW- Intrepidus Wines
We first met Chrissie when she did our first ever Women in Wine event in Sydney, and Elia couldn't get enough of her Chenin!

Chrissie Smith’s Intrepidus Wines was only born in the 2021 vintage, working from a one-acre vineyard in the Canberra District that she farms herself. And that’s critical for her philosophy, with an abrupt career shift leading her to wine and quickly to a vineyard-first approach, recognising that the work done amongst the vines was just as important, if not more so, than the work in the winery. She's been a Young Gun of Wine finalist multiple times!

With three daughters under 11 and a single parent, she has managed to piece together an impressive practical resumé while now also studying viticulture

The label is currently built around sangiovese and shiraz, with tiny amounts of external grapes to allow for experimentation. Blends of the two home grapes make up a rosé and light red, while shiraz is also co-fermented with a splash of viognier, marsanne and roussanne.

On pour at ITV Chrissie will have:
2025 Pet Nat Riesling
2025 Blanc de Gris
2025 Chenin Blanc
2025 Sangio Rose
2024 Touriga Shiraz Grenache

ITV: TASTE OF ORIGIN - The whistle blows on boring wines...

Introducing WA- YEAH Wines (Distributed by Pail and Cooper)

YEAH Wine is a family business run by Sian and Andrew Dawson. They embrace not owning a vineyard, using this as an excuse to source grapes from friends across most of WA’s wine regions.

YEAH Wine aims to make wines of personality and flavour. The WA United range focuses on offering super drinkability and super value. The Single Vineyard wines aim to offer a pure expression of place and grape variety, while the Small Batch wines allow things to get funkier with interesting blends, skin contact, whole bunches and carbonic maceration used to build taste and texture.

YEAH Wine produces small batches (sometimes as little as a single barrel) of handmade wines. Andrew doesn’t find the need jump on the band wagon and use gimmicky terms like ‘natural wine’ or ‘minimal intervention’, but instead aims to make wines as authenticity as possible; wines made with minimal mucking about!

On pour at ITV Andrew will have:
2023 Single Vineyard Chardonnay
2023 Small Batch ‘The Skin Project’ (skin contact - Verdelho)
2023 Small Batch ‘C Bomb’ (chilled red – Syrah)
2022 Single Vineyard Cabernet Franc
2023 Single Vineyard Graciano
2022 Single Vineyard Petit Verdot

ITV: TASTE OF ORIGIN- Could this be the wine that breaks the line?

QUEENSLAND:

Kyle Goodwin is the founder and winemaker of Knucklehead Wines, located in Queensland’s Granite Belt. His journey into wine began in retail, but a deep interest in the craft soon led him to hands-on experience in the cellar.

In 2021, he launched Knucklehead Wines with a clear vision: to create expressive, small-batch wines using minimal-intervention methods. Drawing inspiration from Italian varietals like nebbiolo, montepulciano, and sangiovese, Kyle works closely with local growers and uses traditional techniques such as amphora fermentation and extended skin contact to let the fruit speak for itself.

Since its launch, Knucklehead Wines has gained national attention for its bold yet thoughtful approach. In 2025, the label was named a finalist in the prestigious Young Gun of Wine awards, recognising Kyle as one of the country’s most promising emerging winemakers.

With a commitment to authenticity, community, and craftsmanship, Kyle continues to shape Knucklehead Wines into a label that reflects both place and personality.

He will have the following wines on pour:
2024 Chardonnay
2023 Pinot Noir
2023 Amphora Montepulciano
2022 Skin Contact Sauvignon Blanc
