Alexakis Kotsifali 2021
📍 Crete, Greece 🇬🇷

Kotsifali is a red variety native to the island of Crete.

A medium, translucent ruby colour. On the nose are aromas of violets, roses 🌹, cherries 🍒, and mountain herbs 🌿. It is light-bodied, with bright, juicy acidity. There is a waft of fine-grained tannins, which has a nice interplay with the vibrant red fruits. There is a lot of depth, but there is nice flavour. A medium finish with a hit of tannins. Not overly complex, but nonetheless an enjoyable w**e 🍷.

Parker Estate Kidman Block 2023
📍 Coonawarra, Australia 🇦🇺

The Shiraz fruit 🍇 for this w**e 🍷 is from the Old Vine Block 1 & 2 on the Kidman vineyard. The vineyard was planted in 1969, with the vines on Terra Rosa soil over limestone.

I am of the opinion that Shiraz is very underrated in Coonawarra. It is usually medium-bodied, being more elegant than those produced in Barossa or McLaren Vale.

It is a medium ruby colour. On the nose are aromas of blackberries, plums, red earth, olive tapenade, and a hint of black pepper 🌶️. The cool 2023 vintage emerged on the elegant, lifted palate. This is a w**e more about delicacy than power. There is abundant flavour, but not great depth. There are nice fine-grained tannins framing delicate fruit. Nice acid provides nice texture. Flavours of dark cherries 🍒, plums, blackberries, herbs 🌿, and black paper. There is a nice flow of tannins through the long finish. Solid w**e 🍷.

Xanadu Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
📍 Margaret River, Western Australia 🇦🇺

This is a classic w**e 🍷. It consistently overdivers. This is especially the case in a great Margaret River vintage such as 2023. This w**e also won the Prime Minister’s trophy 🏆 ( W**e of Show)at the 2026 National W**e Show, not that I put a lot of currency in w**e show results.

This is classy stuff, even though it has a long future ahead of it. It opens with aromas of blackberries, blueberries 🫐, plums, cassis, and cloves. It is medium-full-bodied but has a degree of elegance. There is an explosion of flavour, with chalky tannins and lovely acidity. It has energy and poise. It is structured, but well-balanced. It is layered, and finishes long. There are notes of blackcurrant, plums, bay leaf 🍃, and sweet spice. Wonderful w**e 🍷. Will drink beautifully over the next 15 years or so.

Parker Estate Terrace Rosss Cabernet Franc 2025
📍 Coonawarra, South Australia 🇦🇺

Really impressed with the Cabernet Franc’s coming out of Coonawarra. I had a chance to taste several examples at the Coonawarra Roadshow in August.

This is an inaugural release under their Terra Rosa range from Parker Estate. The fruit 🍇 is from their Abbey vineyard.

Medium crimson colour. An aromatic nose of rose 🌹 petals, violets, wet earth 🌍, and cherries 🍒. Fresh and vibrant on the palate. It is elegant, with fine-grained tannins and crunchy acidity. It displays red fruit, dried herb 🌿. and graphite flavours. Good stuff.

Plantagenet Riesling 2007
📍 Great Southern, Western Australia 🇦🇺

I am a big time Riesling lover, and quite partial to those that are produced in the Great Southern w**e region. Plantagenet W**es are one of the top producers in the region.

A deep golden colour. A massive hit of kerosene and petroleum aromas, supported by notes of rmarmalade, dried apricot, and poached peaches 🍑. This has wonderful depth on the palate. It has a rich, oily texture, with an opulent mid-palate. The lovely, bright acidity Mel’s nicely with the quality fruit. It displays notes of orange 🍊 marmalade, lemon 🍋 curd, beeswax, candied ginger 🫚, and marzipan. The finish is very long, with a surge of tropical fruits. Beautiful aged Riesling.

Bric Cencuurio Barolo 2016
Barolo, Piemonte, Italy 🇮🇹

This w**e is from a great Barolo vintage.

A medium garnet colour. The aromatic nose features aromas of violets, roses 🌹, leather, and mountain herbs 🌿. The full-bodied, savoury palate is energetic, and nuanced. It takes you on a journey, beginning with a surge of savoury flavours and red fruits, and finishing with mouthfiling, grippy tannins. Flavours of cherries 🍒, poached plums, leather, turned earth 🌏, to***co, and leather dominate the palate. Everything here is in perfect balance. Finishes impressively long. Very impressive w**e 🍷.

Dom Raz Chardonnay 2024
📍 Macedon Ranges, Australia 🇦🇺

DOMAINE RAZAL /rah’ZAHL/ is a newish brand in the Macedon Ranges, but the vineyard isn’t. The Virgin Hills vineyard was planted by Melbourne restaurateur, Tom Lazar, in 1968. This makes it the oldest vineyard in the Macedon Ranges. The fruit 🍇 for this w**e from plantings in 1993 and 1995. The vineyard in in Lauriston, close to Kyneton.

The Razal in the name is the surname of the original owner of the vineyard spelt backwards.

A mid-straw colour. There is struck match aromas, along with notes of nectarines, grapefruit, and pears on the nose. It is elegant, but there is an impressive depth of flavour. It displays a lovely purity of fruit on the palate. The bright acidity meshes nicely with the glossy fruit. It is poised and there is good tension. Stylistically it feels like a quality Chablis with its crunchy acidity. It displays flavours of lemon 🍋 pith, melons 🍈, yogurt, green apple 🍏, and flint. Lovely w**e. Great value for $28.

Clarendon Hills Onkaparinga Grenache 2015
📍 McLaren Vale, South Australia 🇦🇺

The fruit 🍇 for this w**e is from a vineyard planted to bush vines in the 1940’s. The vineyard is in the sub-region of Blewitt Springs.

The cour is a ruby colour with brown in the outer rim. There are ferrous, earth 🌍, and kirsch aromas on the nose. It is plush and expansive on the palate, with firm, chalky tannins. There is a beautiful, velvety texture, which adds to its complexity. It displays flavours of poached plums, grilled meats, leather, turned earth, and star anise. It finishes long with a surge of grippy tannins. Outstanding w**e 🍷.

Lovely cellar door visit to Curly Flat at Lancefield in the Macedon Ranges. All the w**es were up to the usual high standards from this top producer. Our host, Ray, was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable, and really looked after us. Made the experience very enjoyable.

Kyneton Ridge Reserve Pinot Noir 2024
📍 Macedon Ranges, Australia 🇦🇺

Medium ruby colour. Notes of cherries 🍒, cranberries, autumn leaves 🍂, and a hint of white pepper on the aromatic nose. Nice fine-grained tannins mesh nicely with the quality fruit 🍇. It is savoury and structured. Lovely juicy acidity is a nice contrast to the nice tannins. It displays notes of pomegranate, plums, cherries 🍒, umami, and a hint of forest floor. Finishes a touch short, but overall a really nice w**e 🍷. Very moreish.
