Tonight’s breed - Copper Marans šŸ«šŸ©

This seasons focus is on egg colouring. I think I have 8 girls going into this season. My splash hen, 3 blue hens and 4 blue & splash pullets (5 of which I don’t know what lays what yet 😬 though combs are growing now!) i basically bred from my orginal blue hen and my splash last season. Both had different sires.

I was very selective on eggs used. It has made for some lighter hackle feathering in a 2 males and a female so we will see how that goes. I know who they are so can be taken out if I need. The rest of the girls are going in with rich copper red necks. Along with one of the boys. The splash well they have none but they have great combs and foot feathering šŸ˜‚

The girls have started to pop out some eggs again. A lovely dark speckled egg and a couple dark chocs like the one in the photos. Unsure if this egg is from the pullet from super early last season or the splash as they are both very red. Good to see colour holding up though!

Now I sit and wait for the girls to all lay me dark chocolatey eggs! šŸ™ please please please! I should be able to start the season with 4 hens and the pullets will enter production later on. Everyone’s going to enter the special pen this season so I can categorise their egg colouring. ļæ¼oh 5 hens! I forgot old girl. Who will get one of these young boys to go back over her. She’s done 4 years now as one of the foundation line. Her sister lays light eggs but she’s been with her a long time as a buddy now. Both are enjoying free range time with the other older birds until the season kicks off again.

This pen will produce Blue Black & Splash Copper Marans

Let’s talk about the Australorps (bantam) since they are the best layers I have 🤣

I only got into them last season after a show breeder turned dual purpose sold me some eggs. Well season before now. I didn’t really like them that much. Had a lot of blacks. Ended up using one of the hens to hatch most of these guys. Her eggs are huge! Size of a standard hen egg but bantam size lady.

This season I’m rocking old mate again. With 3 blues and 2 very nicely patterned splash ladies. 2 are more too standard while 3 are for egg size.

Producing a standard size egg from a bantam size bird without any issues is the goal for me this season. Last season it went well. All hens are laying. Egg size has already gone from pullet to hen size. They seem to mature in size very quickly age wise once again, and egg size too. I will give them a few more weeks before hatching some myself.

I have already done a fertility check. Which is fantastic. If you would like eggs before the season begins, they are available now.

40 each dozen, I think there’s probs two dozen available currently for tomorrows post.

Eggs will produce blue splash and black chicks.

I have had eyes on this lad the moment he hatched. No idea why I’ve kept him or what I’m going to do with him. His the weirdest colour I’ve ever hatched. But who doesn’t need a new silkie project colour 🤣

Feel free to add your thoughts on genetic colouring.
