Well that project is out 😂

I listened to an American podcast today which stated silkies, Cochin (or pekin here) & Orpingtons are the most broodiest poultry breeds.

Mmmm and I thought I chose wisely with these projects 😂
Others have only just started laying. Who’s taking bets on if they make it to breeding season hahahaa

These two always play favourite and leave the other out… I don’t like bullies.

The male should sort it out but his out playing nice with all the other friends that have been let out of their cages while we are off season.

My rouge Silver laced lad has had the tree branch for over a year. Ancona comes out and pinches it straight away 😂 duccles are huddled in a corner and the SL has taking to the middle of their roost bar 🤣

The only lot that is penned over there is the fairy eggers! Everyone else is on break.

This is currently the dude I was sooo excited to have in my blue splash pen this season 😂 gosh he turned horrendous. Horns for days. Dark though! Stance is horrible (doesn’t look bad in the picture but it really is that bad!) He has no neck what’s so ever 🤣 his got good colouring and great feet but that only gets ya so far man! Oh and his a scaredy cat… terrified oh everything in life. Even me adding food to their bowl.

And this my friends is why you need to grow out many before you make final decisions 😂

Also why the pen has gone back to Blue BLACK & Splash 😂 I moved a black male in.

I do have another splash. Which looks promising. But you know… bad things have happened before 😬😒🤮

It’s ok, 3 of my babies are still stuck here for a heap of years yet 👦🏽👧🏽👦🏼😂

Tonight’s breed - Copper Marans 🍫🍩

This seasons focus is on egg colouring. I think I have 8 girls going into this season. My splash hen, 3 blue hens and 4 blue & splash pullets (5 of which I don’t know what lays what yet 😬 though combs are growing now!) i basically bred from my orginal blue hen and my splash last season. Both had different sires.

I was very selective on eggs used. It has made for some lighter hackle feathering in a 2 males and a female so we will see how that goes. I know who they are so can be taken out if I need. The rest of the girls are going in with rich copper red necks. Along with one of the boys. The splash well they have none but they have great combs and foot feathering 😂

The girls have started to pop out some eggs again. A lovely dark speckled egg and a couple dark chocs like the one in the photos. Unsure if this egg is from the pullet from super early last season or the splash as they are both very red. Good to see colour holding up though!

Now I sit and wait for the girls to all lay me dark chocolatey eggs! 🙏 please please please! I should be able to start the season with 4 hens and the pullets will enter production later on. Everyone’s going to enter the special pen this season so I can categorise their egg colouring. oh 5 hens! I forgot old girl. Who will get one of these young boys to go back over her. She’s done 4 years now as one of the foundation line. Her sister lays light eggs but she’s been with her a long time as a buddy now. Both are enjoying free range time with the other older birds until the season kicks off again.

This pen will produce Blue Black & Splash Copper Marans
