🐑 2025 vs 2026 Lambing Results

Following on from yesterday’s final lambing update, I thought I’d share a comparison with last year’s results.

It’s been a fantastic lambing season at Elata Farm, with the final lambing percentage increasing from 132% to 175% and lamb survival improving from 85% to 97%!

These improvements haven’t happened by chance. I think several factors have contributed to this year’s success:

🌱 Selective breeding – I removed ewes from the breeding flock that hadn’t performed well in previous seasons, focusing on retaining productive, healthy mothers.

🌱 Better pasture – Improved pasture growth and feed availability helped support the ewes through late pregnancy and lactation.

🌱 A smaller flock – With fewer ewes this year, there was less grazing pressure during what was a very dry start to spring.

🦊 Fox control – Active predator management helped reduce losses during the particularly vulnerable first few weeks of lambing.

Perhaps the most rewarding result is that I lost just 1 lamb this season, compared with 12 last year.

Farming is a constant learning process, and there are always factors outside my control. But it’s encouraging to see how thoughtful livestock management and improvements to the land can translate into better animal welfare and productivity.
