What is a family business?
That was one of the big questions we dug into at yesterday’s roundtable with Catherine Sayer, CEO of the Family Business Association (FBA). Organised by the wonderful Anesan Naidoo
The short answer? It’s any business where family, ownership and the business itself are connected. Could be first generation or seventh. Small, medium or large. Family-owned businesses, family enterprises, family offices...even a husband and wife duo. If family values and legacy sit at the heart of how you operate, you’re in the club.
It was so nice to see Catherine sit down with us for honest and informative discussions. Even better was hearing her ask “what can we do better?” and then genuinely listen and respond. Not every idea is a winner, but every idea still counts. Being open like that is real leadership.
We haven’t been part of FBA for all that long, yet it’s already proven invaluable. There’s a genuine sense of community and practical support that just lands differently when you’re navigating both family and business at the same time.
Exciting times ahead for the organisation. If you run a family business (or suspect you might) or simply want to learn more, it’s free to subscribe to their newsletter. Head to https://www.familybusinessassociation.org/ and hit Subscribe.
Highly recommend checking them out.
