This crew deserve their own special post. There is no way Percy, myself and the girls would be able to get through a mob of this size all by ourselves in a day let alone 5 hours so every year we rely on friends and family to help us. Our amazing friends and family give up their days off and weekends to come and helps us when ever we need a helping hand or have cattle work to do. Some of them love it that much they take days off just to be there. You all know who your are and some of you were unavailable this weekend but would have been there if you could. We appreciate every single one of you and we could not do it with out you. Thank you all so very much.

It was an early start Saturday morning to give us enough time to get through all the calves and to also get the majority done during the cooler hours. We broke into teams, drafting team and calf processing team. Both jobs are happening at the same time to reduce the amount of time the cows and calves are in the yards, reducing weight loss and stress.

Drafting team consisted of 4 adults and the calf processing team consisted of 3 adults and all the kids. The kids all have the responsibility of keeping the calves moving up the race, counting and NLIS ear tags.

The drafting team worked well with only letting one calf through (whoops, that’s a carton 😂) The cows were a pleasure to work today, there was only 3 very “Alert” cows that we had to be mindful of. All the rest did their thing and walked through the yards quietly. We drafted 451 cows, 5 bulls were brought in (the rest were left out in the paddock as they can be dangerous having in the yards with the fighting they do amongst them selves) and one of our favourite poddy steers “baldy”.

The calf processing team worked like a well oiled machine with the calves being in and out with in 25seconds for a heifer and 35seconds for a steer. Amazing effort for this team. They processed close to 400 calves ( the numbers have been a bit mixed up from our little helpers) and with the ones that went a miss yesterday (we went back to the watering point today and counted the calves that were there) we can almost say the calving season is complete.

The calves that have been missed this time will be caught up at weaning.

Keep an eye out for our crazy cat “Raven.” No show with out punch with that one. Whenever we are working in the yards she is right there with us. She wanders down to the yards all by herself usually following the kids down when they walk down. She was crawling along the rails yesterday just watching all the cows and calves.

Food prepping tonight.

By the look of the weather predictions it is going to be a hot one. So planning cold meats, zucchini slice and salad for lunch on Saturday. This is also an easy meal to quickly grab out of the fridge and feed a group of people.

Zucchini slice is always a winner. I follow Julie Goodwin’s Zucchini slice recipe as a guide but I like to add corn to mine to add more flavour. I also like to double it and keep adding eggs until it gets to a good consistency.

This one has the following;
3 very large Zucchini’s grated
6 short cut bacon pieces cut up into small pieces
1 tin of corn kernels
1 large onion diced
2 cups of tasty grated cheese
3/4 cup of vegetable oil
2 cups of self raising flour
13 Tomaren Farm Fresh eggs 😉

Mix all ingredients together and place in a baking paper lined baking dish. I used a 30cm x 20cm baking dish for this one and baked it in the oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 50mins.

Yesterday Lainey also made a Cinnamon Tea Cake for a sweet treat at lunch time on Saturday.

Oh and the cows have made it down to the house. Still haven’t seen them as we were in Mackay today but they have left evidence behind that they were here.

How good was the rain last night and this morning. We measured 41mm at the house rain guage for the day today. That is going to help with dust suppression in the cattle yards on the weekend 🤞🏻 it keeps the temperature down too.

Percy and Kian looked after the maintenance on the motorbikes this afternoon. They are ready to go for mustering.

Cows have almost ventured all the way down to the house. I can hear them, so they are not to far away.

How much rain did you measure at your house?

Today we moved bullocks out of the paddock that the cows are going into once they have finished in the yards.

Then it was a moment of we interrupt our preparing for mustering with a large egg order.

Late this afternoon we had an egg order come in, so it was all systems go to get them boxed and delivered early this evening. It was a very small turn around for this order but with all our helpers we nailed it.

We are over the moon at Tomaren. Since the 22nd November we have received 108mm of beautiful rain. This puts us into the growing season. We no longer refer to the wet season or dry season. It is the growing season or non growing season.

As the last few years have shown us we can still receive rain in the non growing season (Dry Season) however the grass growth during this period is minimal, if any, even with rain. You may notice in your house yard, during the colder months (non growing season) you do not have to mow the lawn as often.

We consider the growing season upon us when we receive 50mm or more over a period of 3days anytime after September when the weather has warmed up. We received 57mm between 26-28th November. We drive around the paddocks and it is extremely evident the grass is growing. You will notice in your own house yard that the mower will be now out a lot more regular to keep your lawn at a nice length.

The grass is growing so the cows are happy, the hens are happy and with that, they are all doing their job in rejuvenating our soils.

How much rain have you measured at your place since the 22nd November?

Some baby calf spam.

Love this time of year with all the babies hitting the ground. But I do not love how dry it is currently. Our fingers are crossed that we may get lucky with a storm or two in the next few days.

With how dry it is we still have an abundance of grass however the grass has lost all its nutrional value. So if no rain is received by Christmas the amazing mums are going to know about it. They will be using everything they have in storage with in their body to make all the much needed milk for their babies. We do feed them supplements to keep up their nutrition but nothing beats beautiful green grass.
