Portsea Estate Wines

Portsea Estate Wines Regeneratively run single-vineyard wines grown and crafted on the calcareous, maritime soils of Australia's wildest coastline. Winemaker: Matt Lugg

The Portsea Estate vineyard is located on the century old Tintagel property overlooking Bass Strait at the very tip of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Our philosophy is to produce hand crafted wines that represent the unique characters of the maritime site. The property is owned and managed by vigneron and filmmaker, Warwick Ross and his sister Caron. Warwick recently produced and directed highl

y awarded feature-documentary, RED OBSESSION, which investigates China's obsession with the fine wines of Bordeaux. Narrated by Academy Award winner, Russell Crowe, the film melded Warwick's passion for wine-making and cinema. RED OBSESSION is now available on iTunes and DVD after a global theatrical release.

MEET THE STAFF - Introducing Matt

What do you do at PE? I am viticulturalist and winemaker.

If you were a wine variety what would you be and why? Viognier - I’m constantly out of fashion and better in a cool-climate.

What’s the unofficial motto of our winery?
Making pour decisions daily...

What’s your favourite PE drop and why? The Portsea Estate Stonecutters Block Chardonnay. Original plantings, the vineyard has evolved significantly to become something quite special - it grows a unique wine that could only be from Portsea.

MEET THE STAFF - Introducing Kate

What do you do at PE?
Marketing, Social Media, Admin and Vineyard Assistant. After 15 years of media in the big smoke I decided to leave the dark side and throw in a sea change too! I spent the last year under the guidance of Sean at the Main Ridge vineyard and recently moved to the Portsea winery to assist with all things marketing and social media.

If you were a wine variety, what would you be and why?
I’d be a Chardonnay—versatile, sometimes a little oaky, and always ready to adapt to any situation, whether it’s a fancy dinner, casual BBQ or chips on the couch.

What’s the unofficial motto of our winery?
We’re not just a winery, we’re a grape escape! (Sorry, not sorry.)

What’s your favourite PE drop and why?
Stonecutters Chardonnay (just!), followed closely by the Birthday Hill Pinot Noir and the rosé!

MEET THE STAFF - Introducing Sean

What do you do at Portsea Estate?
Main Ridge Vineyard and Property Manager. I’m all things viticulture over at our Main Ridge site; our established vineyards are producing exceptional wine and we have doubled our acreage since 2022. I’ve found it equally important to rehabilitate the land and vegetation around the vineyards as it all ties in to the ecosystem. If I’m not sharpening a chainsaw or building a gate to house our sheep then I’ll usually be in the tractor where I’m most happy!

If you were a wine variety what would you be and why?
Have to be Riesling; sharp, ages well and a little bit diesel’y.

What’s the unofficial motto of our winery?
Wine & Dine after every vine.

What’s your favourite Portsea Estate drop and why?
The Main Ridge Chardonnay of course! It’s just so representative of the site and all the hard work that goes into it.

These cover crops are thriving in the new plantings area at our Main Ridge winery. A mixture of Ryecorn, Oats, Tillage Radish, Crimson Clover and Italian Ryegrass has been planted specially aimed at improving soil structure and providing the best home possible for our new Chardonnay vines to be planted late October.

Cover crops improve carbon storage, water retention, microbial/insect diversity and also help reduce w**d pressure.
Not just pretty to look at, they will help us grow exceptional quality grapes and make beautiful wine.

Thanks to our friends pvc and for the supplies and guidance.

Ever wondered what bees get up to in winter? Our General Manager, winemaker and budding apiarist Will Ross Will Ross takes us for a tour of Portsea Estate’s bee sanctuary and an in-depth look at one of our hives.

Big thanks to our mentor Beethecure.com who does brilliant work on the Mornington Peninsula promoting and caring for our local bee population.
