Nothing better than a little warm hollow where we can hang out together out of the wind. How rude of you to interrupt Mr. Farmer!

Nothing special about these girls. They're culls that have had a border over them. There is, however, plenty of green grass and a rainbow! So, to celebrate the one year anniversary of the drought breaking in Southwest Vic in 2025 (not the end of the hard work, just the day it rained) we thought we'd post this as a little reminder that, when the times are tough, there's always better days ahead.

These little guys were born on, or just prior to, the night of 1 June. As a welcome to the world they had 19 mm dumped on them and winds of up to 90kph. That's not unusual here. We have to pull every lever we can to keep twin lambs alive in those conditions. One that we've been working on for a while is testing sires for genetic cold tolerance through the Lincoln University in NZ. We think it's got a place in our industry. You can learn more about it here https://research.lincoln.ac.nz/testing-analytical-services/gene-marker-lab

We're set and forget lambers at Connewarran but every now and again, on a nice afternoon, we do sneak out and take a look. This is what we like to see. Ewes that get their lambs in order before they follow the mob.

Reproductive efficiency is a mild obsession for us. What did she scan? What did she bring in? We want those two numbers to be the same. You need to be a good calm mum to achieve that year after year, especially down at cold, wet, windy, foxy, Mortlake!

One habit we've got into in recent years is to lamb an "indicator mob" close to the house. It really just allows you to look over the fence with a cup of tea, see how things are going, and hopefully relax knowing things are similar everywhere else. They were a bit slow to start this year, but seem to have got going now.

We love a good mum at Connewarran. So from all the team here, to all the Mums out there, we hope you had a great day.

Not long now, hopefully, ladies. These girls have all got triplets and will get the best shelter we can come up with. It's not an easy task getting three through and we look forward to seeing how these girls go!

Our last groups of ewes being split up to lamb. Mortlake is a great proving ground for merinos when it comes to lamb survival. Cold tolerance is critical as well as maternal capacity. We're looking pretty good for condition score and feed on offer at this point. We've got our twinners down in some lower lying areas with beautiful old red gums to break up the wind. Looking forward to seeing the results!

That's your 6 & 1 and short acting for this year ladies. We'll do your big sisters tomorrow and split you up into your paddocks to lamb in a few days.
