Connewarran Merino Stud

Connewarran Merino Stud RESILIENT. PLAIN. FINE. Connewarran breeds plain bodied, fine wool merinos which are highly productive in all conditions.

Based in Southwest Victoria, our sheep must handle dry or wet summers and cold, wet, windy winters.

It's amazing how much you can observe from just sitting quietly by a fence post. These lambs have been weaned and held in the yard and just released to this small paddock while they settle down for a couple of days. They've got it easy this year, a bit of warm weather ahead of them rather than the sideways sleet we often wean in! Best of luck little friends. We'll see you in a week or so for your booster vaccination.

Contract musterers are a bit light on for work at the moment, but they like to keep the wheels turning all the same.

We talk a lot about maternal capability at Connewarran. But the truth is, the pinnacle has already been reached.

Individual WECs today. It's a trait many people value highly in resilient, high rainfall merinos. Pulling WECs isn't our favourite job but at least it kept our hands warm and gave us the chance to look at some nice white wools.

Great day last year catching up with so many really good sheep people. Looking forward to doing it again in a couple of days.

Mothering is all finished. What a pity, it's the best job of the year! Rain, hail or shine we're always keen to get out and find out what our girls (with the help of our boys of course) have produced this season.

What a way to start the morning. Splitting the first half dozen off the mob to begin solving the day's puzzle; fifty odd single bearing ewes and lambs on this particular day.

We love our reliable old girls. People get excited about compressing generation intervals, which is great in theory. In practice, we're in no hurry to move on from this ewe, 20501. She's raised twins in each of the last four years. Last year, a serious drought year, she cut 5.7kg of beautiful, fine, fleece wool with a belly to chuck on top. Looks like this year will be a pretty similar story. As far as we're concerned she can hang around as long as she likes!
