𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗕𝗨𝗟𝗟 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘. 𝗔 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧 𝗖𝗢𝗪 𝗙𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗟𝗬 𝗞𝗘𝗘𝗣𝗦 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗚𝗛.

Most Angus breeders can access the same leading sires. What sets a breeding program apart is the strength and consistency of the cow families underneath them.

Last week, we showed three ET full sisters from DSK Tel Lady Heather R73 by Landfall New Ground N90. This week, we are showing three more R73 daughters—each by a different sire.

Three daughters. Three different sires. One great cow family continuing to breed its type.

Put the photographs together and the Lady Heather stamp is easy to see: length, scale, rib and body, with strong tops, depth through the flank and genuine maternal power.

Their September 2026 Angus Australia figures tell the same story. All three rank in the top 7% or better for 200-day growth, the top 5% or better for 400-day growth and the top 7% or better for 600-day growth.

That is serious weight-for-age performance repeated through three separate matings.

V9 ranks in the top 1% for all three growth traits and top 2% for carcase weight. She was also Junior Champion Angus Heifer and Supreme Junior Champion Beef Breed Heifer at the 2025 Melbourne Royal.

Her Melbourne result showed the Lady Heather phenotype could compete at Royal level. Just as important to us is seeing the same maternal power and performance in V22 and U12, by two more sires.

A great cow family gives breeders options. Different sires can add or balance particular traits, while the maternal foundation keeps coming through.

Across these first two posts, we have shown six daughters of R73 by four different sires.

The bulls have changed. The growth, cow power and Lady Heather stamp have remained.

This is more than one good cow or one successful mating. It is a cow family worth building around.

𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗔 𝗖𝗢𝗪 𝗙𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗟𝗬 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗦 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘.

Anyone can buy semen from a popular sire.

The harder part—and the part that gives a breeding program its identity—is finding a cow family that will consistently breed its type.

Ashgrove Lady Heather U1, U4 and U7 are ET full sisters by Landfall New Ground N90 from DSK Tel Lady Heather R73.

Put the three beside one another and the family likeness is hard to miss.

They have plenty of rib and body, are strong over their tops and deep through the flank, with length, scale, volume and genuine maternal power.

They are not identical. Good full sisters rarely are. But there is no mistaking that these three carry the same stamp.

The figures back them up.

All three rank in the top 7% or better for 200-day growth and the top 5% or better for both 400- and 600-day growth.

All three also have NFI-F EBVs more favourable than the current breed average. In practical terms, that points towards genetics for lower feed intake at the same weight and rate of gain during feedlot finishing. U7 ranks in the top 11%.

Growth and weight for age matter in commercial beef production. So does the feed required to produce it.

These are the sort of females we want behind future herd bulls and replacement females—powerful brood cows with the performance to back them up.

When that same useful type appears across three full sisters, it tells you something about the cow behind them.

That cow is DSK Tel Lady Heather R73, pictured last.

𝗔 𝗖𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 — 𝗔𝗦𝗛𝗚𝗥𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗪 𝗙𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗔𝗧 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞

There’s no better measure of a cow family than seeing its genetics go away and work in another breeding program — particularly when that client comes back to Ashgrove again.

We recently received an update from repeat Ashgrove buyer Crooked River Angus.

Ashgrove Miss America U9 is springing up and due to calve shortly, while her Craftsman daughter, W15, is preparing to be joined, and in their words, “looks outstanding.”

U9 is a daughter of G A R Sure Fire 2914, bringing the 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 of Gardiner Angus Ranch in the USA into the Ashgrove herd.

Gardiner genetics have had a significant impact on Australian Angus through sires such as G A R Hometown, G A R Ashland, G A R Prophet and G A R Sure Fire himself — names familiar to many Australian Angus breeders.

That maternal influence is backed by objective performance. U9 currently ranks in the top 2% of the breed for Birth Weight and top 6% for IMF, while W15 combines a top 15% Birth Weight EBV with top 14% EMA, top 13% Milk and top 9% $A.

Access to a great sire is one thing. Having the cow families worth breeding him to is another.

𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿.

Crooked River Angus have since returned to Ashgrove and added another female — this time from our 𝗟𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 cow family.

The maternal foundations of this family in Australia go back to Coldstream Lady Heather 92S, selected in Canada by DSK Angus from the Coldstream Angus program and brought into their donor program.

Her influence carried through to DSK Tel Lady Heather R73, who has become an important matriarch within the Ashgrove program.

R73 was Reserve Senior Champion Angus Female at the 2023 Melbourne Royal, but her real value to us is what she has gone on to produce.

Her daughter, Ashgrove Lady Heather V9, was named 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝘂𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗿 and 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝗳 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗶𝗳𝗲𝗿 at the 2025 Melbourne Royal, while R73 later placed second in the Dam’s Progeny class at the 2026 Sydney Royal.

The performance runs through the family as well. R73 ranks in the top 1% of the breed for 200- and 400-day growth and top 2% for 600-day growth, while V9 is also top 1% for 200- and 400-day growth, top 2% for 600-day growth and Carcase Weight, and top 5% for Retail Beef Yield.

That is what we want from our cow families.

Not one good female.

A maternal line that keeps producing cattle worth breeding from — with phenotype, pedigree and objective performance behind them, generation after generation.

And ultimately, the best proof is seeing those genetics leave Ashgrove, work in somebody else’s herd and have that client come back for more.

V1 is a moderate, thick two-year-old by Musgrave 316 Exclusive and a maternal granddaughter of the renowned Baldridge Isabel Y69.

Few Angus females have influenced modern pedigrees like Y69, with AI sires including Baldridge Beast Mode, Baldridge Colonel, Baldridge Badger, Pine View Mogul and Sterling Pacific 904 all tracing back to her maternal line.

V1’s dam, Baldridge Isabel D751, is a Mill Bar Hickok 7242 daughter directly from Y69. A half interest in D751 sold for US$27,000, while her full sister, Baldridge Isabel D753, sold for US$160,000.
