Today we have been shortlisted for the Dark Horse Award from Halliday Halliday Wine Companion ! This award is given to wineries that are regional hidden gems and true underdogs, as nominated by the Halliday Tasting Team.

“Pioneers of organic and biodynamic wine farming Janet and Erinn Klein have made substantial strides in quality since establishing their high-density Mount Summit vineyard in ’01. A deft touch in the winery and judicious oak handling has allowed the wines to speak clearly of the decisions made in the vineyard – with detail, restraint, elegance and poise throughout, even in the most weathered vintages. And it’s for this gentle approach, a quiet way with things, that Ngeringa is a fitting Dark Horse.” – Katrina Butler

The 2027 Halliday Awards are announced on Thursday 20th August, and we wait with bated breath until then, to see if Erinn and Janet bring home the trophy!

Now that picking has officially finished for us, we spent a day last week completling one of the most special practices of the biodynamic process. Horn burying in biodynamics is a foundational practice used to create “Preparation 500”, where cow horns are filled with fresh manure from our beautiful Highland Cows, and buried over winter to transform into a nutrient-rich humus activator.

Buried for roughly six months, we then dig the horns up in the Spring and mix their powdered contents with water before spraying it over the vineyard to boost soil health, encourage microbial activity, and support root development.
