⛔ HARTMANN ROAD TEMPORARY CLOSURE ⛔

From Monday 7 September, Hartmann Road will be closed to through traffic between Dean Street and Emerald Way roundabout for up to eight weeks, subject to weather and site conditions.
This is the final stage of the Eastern Sewer Trunk Main project. Crews will connect new sewer pipes to existing infrastructure on Emerald Way and decommission the Dean Street pump station.
Works will run Monday to Friday, 7am–5pm, with extended days and/or Saturday shifts implemented, if required.

What this means for you:
• Pedestrian and local access stays open throughout
• Light vehicles (cars, utes, small vans) will detour via Belmont Crescent, Douglas Drive and Dean Street
• Heavy vehicles follow a separate detour via Springs Road, Heysen Boulevard. and Paech Road — see the link below for details
• Expect some noise, dust and machinery during work hours, and occasional overnight pump noise as crews manage groundwater.

We know eight weeks is a long time to live with a closed road, and we appreciate your patience while we deliver this important upgrade for the community.

🚧 Bald Hills Road Nightworks Update 🚧

We know it's been a long stretch of works in this area, and we want to keep you updated as we move through the final stages.

📍 Bald Hills Road: Pipeline installation activities on Bald Hills Road is due to finish next week.

⛳ Aston Hills Golf Course: The crew will then move to the driveway into AHGC to connect the new sewer main to an existing pipe near the club's carpark. We expect this to take one week of night shifts.

🚦 Detours: For safety reasons, existing night-time detours will stay in place until the AHGC works are complete.

One final week of nightworks will be needed to reinstate the asphalt in both locations:
• AHGC asphalt will be undertaken on the night of 21 August.
• Bald Hills Road reinstatement, including asphalting, will be undertaken from 13 to 18 September, pending weather and successful pre-commissioning.
• A small crew will return soon after reinstatement works for one to two nights to undertake line marking.

Speed restrictions along Bald Hills Road will stay in place until line marking is finished, to protect both crews and the community.

📅 Looking ahead: Once works on Bald Hills Road and at the golf course are complete, crews will move to Hartmann Road. This work will involve 10-hour day shifts with a full 24/7 road closure. We expect this to begin mid- to late-September and will share more details closer to commencement.

We genuinely appreciate how much these works have asked of this community — the disruption to routines, sleep, and everyday travel hasn't gone unnoticed — and we’re grateful for your understanding as we work towards completing this essential infrastructure for Mount Barker.

☀️ Early morning works | Wastewater Treatment Plant

If you spot lights early in the morning at the site of the new Laratinga Wastewater Recovery Plant along Springs Road — that's our crew hard at work! 🔦

We have our final early morning concrete pour this Wednesday, 29 July, weather permitting. Works will kick off from around 5am.

Concrete trucks will travel from Springs Road into the treatment plant entrance, along the road that leads to the rear of St Francis de Sales College, past the Environment Services Centre, Laratinga Pavilion, and the Community Shed.

As a result, there will be increased construction vehicle movements in the area during morning drop-off times and throughout the day.

Noise will be kept to a minimum as much as practicable, and overall impacts are expected to be minimal.

🐶🛁 Not all water is bath-time approved! 🛁🐶

That cute pup in the tub is here with an important reminder: recycled water is a fantastic resource, but it’s not for everything.

Recycled water can be used for:
✅Watering lawns, gardens, flowers, fruit trees and vegetables
✅ Flushing toilets
✅ Washing cars
✅ Filling ornamental ponds and water features (without fish)

Please do NOT use recycled water for:
🚫 Drinking (including for pets)
🚫 Cooking or rinsing food
🚫 Baths, showers or handwashing
🚫 Washing clothes
🚫 Filling pools or spas
🚫 Recreational water play
🚫 Bathing pets – recycled water may cause skin irritation, especially for animals with sensitive skin.

It's also important to remember that bore water is not safe for drinking or food preparation and should not be used on edible plants such as fruit trees and vegetables.

As a recycled water customer, you can help keep the system safe by:
✔️ Reporting leaks, bursts or water quality concerns
✔️ Providing access to your recycled water meter when required
✔️ Using licensed plumbers for any additional infrastructure
✔️ Using recycled water only at the property it is supplied to

Our team also conducts routine audits to ensure recycled water and drinking water systems remain safely separated and compliant. Every drop counts—and using recycled water correctly helps protect public health while making the most of this valuable resource. 💧

🌿💧Recycled Water Helping Local Business Thrive 🌿💧

For Mandalay House & Garden, one of Mount Barker district’s most iconic garden wedding venues, secure access to water is essential.

Since connecting to GMB Water’s recycled water network, the business has significantly extended its wedding season, improved water security and reduced operating costs. The reliable supply has also enabled automated irrigation, reducing labour requirements and helping maintain the beautiful gardens that are at the heart of the venue.

The project has delivered important sustainability benefits too, supporting new native plantings and reducing reliance on traditional water sources.

🌱 Laratinga Water Recovery Plant – Project Update 🌱

We’ve made more great progress at the new Laratinga Water Recovery Plant, thanks to some welcome good weather last week!

Here’s an update on what’s been happening on site:
🏗️Building momentum and site works progressing
• Another major concrete pour took place on Friday for one of the plant’s large bioreactor bases – a key part of how the plant will treat wastewater.
• One large section of the bioreactor walls has been completed, with more pours over the weekend and this week.
• Steel work is continuing across multiple areas as the structure starts to take shape.
• Landscaping preparation has begun around what will be the new office, control room and laboratory building.
• Excavation for the balance tank (an important part of managing water flow through the plant) is back underway, with soil being safely transported off site.

📍This is a major investment in our region’s future—supporting population growth, protecting the environment, and ensuring reliable wastewater services for years to come.

We’re excited to see the plant continuing to rise from the ground and will keep sharing updates along the way! 🌿

Dean brings over 40 years’ of experience in the field, business and managing a diverse range of construction and infrastructure and organisational change projects and business, process change.

Since 2004, his passion and focus has been client-side project management, coordinating consultants, contractors, and client internal and external teams, managing, developing and delivering projects through the full life-cycle.

At GMB Water, Dean is responsible for the management of the capital delivery team including the oversight and the delivery of the sewer trunk program and Laratinga Water Recovery Plant.

His key experience and skills includes:

• A strong technical background and over 20 years of project management
• Supporting and liaising with key internal and external stakeholders
• Formation, leading and supporting a team of internal and external teams of project managers and consultancies
• Driving continuous improvement in organisational project management maturity improvement
• Managing the organisation’s capital delivery program and budget

With his years of experience and a passion for delivering projects, Dean continues to play a pivotal role in shaping and strengthening GMB Water’s infrastructure and future. 💦

🚧 Heads up, Mount Barker — night works commencing on Bald Hills Road this Sunday

Construction crews will begin night works on Bald Hills Road from this Sunday, 21 June, as part of GMB Water’s Eastern Sector Trunk Main sewer upgrade project.

Works will run Sunday to Thursday, 7:00 pm to 6:00 am, for approximately 2-3 months.

A full road closure will be in place on Bald Hills Road during nightshifts, with the road reopened daily under speed restrictions.

Two signed detour routes are in place to manage traffic in each direction:
📍 Eastbound: Scarborough Way → Tate Avenue → Green Avenue
📍 Westbound: Green Avenue → Penny Street → Scarborough Way

Look out for VMS boards and traffic signs to guide you through. Traffic controllers will be on site to assist.

🚧 Advance notice for Hartmann Road residents and commuters

As part of the Eastern Sewer Trunk Main (ESTM) project, Hartmann Road will need a full closure with detours later this year so we can install a new section of sewer pipe between Dean Street and Emerald Way (refer attached map).

These works are the final stage of a broader sewer installation program that has been under construction across Mount Barker since 2023.

We know it’s been a big year for roadworks across Mount Barker, and we appreciate that’s a lot to deal with. With that in mind, we've changed our approach for this next stage of the ESTM to reduce the impact on the Hartmann Road community and commuters, where possible:

📌 We’re finishing works on Bald Hills Road first, so you’re not dealing with two major closures in this location at once
📌 That crew will then join the Hartmann Road team, so we can work from both ends of the closure and finish faster.
📌 We’re implementing extended working hours so that we can get in, get it done, and get out as quickly as possible.

With these changes, we expect the works to take approximately seven (7) weeks, instead of the original 10-week program, weather and ground conditions permitting.
